  3. An Integrating Resource is: • A bibliographic resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole. Three Major Types of IRs • Updating Loose-leaf • A bibliographic resource that consists of a base volume(s) updated by separate pages, which are inserted, removed, and/or substituted. • Updating Database • A database is a collection of logically interrelated data stored together in one or more computerized files, usually created and managed by a database management system. • Updating Web Site • A Web site that is updated, but does not fit into one of the other Type of Continuing Resource categories. Integrating Resources, Our Users, and the Quest Interface • MARC data structure is not fully implemented by OCLC and some of the early records need work, but it’s not to early to think about 1.) how we will interpret integrating resources to our users and 2.) modifying the Quest interface so that patrons can benefit from the new format. • The following searches which are currently available provide a rough approximation of what search results for IR searches will look like: • integrating resources (wfs=s and wbl=m) • electronic integrating resources (wfs=s and wbl=m and wfs=m) • online bibliographic databases (requires indexing additional field) • print looseleafs (wfs=s and wbl=m) not wfs=m • Public Services Update #1—January 2005 – Betsy McKelvey

  7. A serial is: “A continuing resource issued in a succession of discrete parts, usually bearing numbering, that has no predeterminedconclusion. Highlights: Serials • Distinction between major and minor title changes • Fewer new records due to title changes QUEST • CONSER is applying rule changes and consolidating titles, placing variant titles in fields searchable in Quest’s title index. E-Journal Cataloging At BC • Early cataloging was done in house. • Experiments with separate records • Experiment with adding electronic version to print record • Implementation of Serials Solutions MARC record service in 2003. • Electronic holdings are still found on some print records. The information on print records is less reliable than the information on Serials Solutions records. • Probable change to ExLibris MARCIT which uses FindIT (SFX) profile.

  17. Serials Solutions Records • Finding them: • In Adanced Search, use drop down box to limit search to “Journals on the Web” • Knowing you’ve found them: • In MARC view 040=wasess • FMT field is EJ (wfm=ej)

  18. Serials Solutions Brief Records • Used when a full CONSER record isn’t available. • Minimal record, no subject headings

  19. Outsourced records and subtitles The main title field of the bibliographic record routinely carries the title & subtitle. The presence of the subtitle in the main title field of a serial record can make searching difficult; the subtitle will force the title lower in the list and unless you scroll down, a quick search may not find the title. For in house records, Cataloging removes the subtitle from the title field and creates a variant title field that holds the title with subtitle [Sys. 897301]. Those who are searching titles from citations will still have access to the title/subtitle string. This extra step is not taken with Serials Solutions records.

Part IV: • Links users directly from citation online database to full text article • Knowledge base containing information about all of our e-journals helps make the connections. • Analyze searches FindIT does in Quest with a critical human eye -- although it’s a powerful machine, it can’t think!
