Do-Now • Finish up your agendas and pass them up to the front of the class • Remember to: • Put your name at the top • Specify exactly what skills practice you have been assigned and check it off as you complete it • Mention the exact timeframe of extracurricular activities • Write down upcoming tests and projects • DON’T LEAVE ANY SQUARES BLANK!!! (write “No SP” if you weren’t assigned anything)

  3. What is this flag? What images, emotions and thoughts come to mind when you see it?

  4. *Carolina capitol building controversy* What do you think this issue says about the strength of community bonds between people in South Carolina? (Think about how this situation applies to the criteria for judging the strength of community bonds) • # and quality of commonalities • Mutual respect and concern • Quality and quantity of interaction • Overarching organizational structure (political system)

  5. Why would they do that? Why do you think that some people defend flying the southern cross (confederate flag) over the capitol building? Is it worth it given the effects that it has on community? Tradition and Heritage

  6. Let’s look at another example from… South Africa Malema’s public recitation of “Shoot the Boer”: (Vocabulary… What is a Boer again?) Link to news article from The Guardian (In September) : http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/sep/12/julius-malema-guilty-hate-speech Look for the who, what , when , where and why of the article!

  7. “Shoot the Boer” Do you support Malema in singing this song? Do you think the song adds or detracts from the strength of community bonds in South Africa?   8. Bringing it home Exit ticket: “What is one thing that other students in our pride do which shows a lack of mutual respect or concern towards one another or the pride leader?” Put your name on the top of your response sheet and turn in to the skills practice tray.
