Academic Program Review Highlights

since 2001 biology has had the greatest increase in enrollment of the 6 largest campus departments
Since 2001, Biology has had the greatest increase in enrollment of the 6 largest campus departments.

Biology has grown to the 3rd largest FTSE generator at PC with the smallest 110 fund and a lower full time faculty to student ratio of the largest campus departments.


Full time biology faculty shortages have been a long term problem limiting FTSE in key areas. There has been no overall increase in biology faculty for more than 15 years.

Biology classes are the “most highly efficient users of space at PC” with near 110% utilization (Office of PIRE)

PC Natural Science departments have greater proportion of minority, female, and Hispanic faculty than other MCCCD science areas and other colleges nationally (MCCCD EEOE/AA Office)

Natural Sciences = Academic lab science departments

Natural Science = Academic lab sciences

PC Biology students complete classes with a C grade or better at a higher rate than other MCCCD Biology Departments

1. Full time faculty to help address understaffing and dramatic growth from the past 5 years.

2. Classrooms to fit large enrollment of biology classes with appropriate audiovisual equipment.

3. Increase student learning support through internet delivery of coursework and study and project aids.
