  14. Crisis USG of Crisis

  15. What is Crisis? • Fast-paced! • Delegates have to think on their feet • Committees are very specialized • Often based in historical events, but take can take place in the present and future, as well • Delegates take on the role of unique characters • Representing individuals with personal goals

  16. What is Crisis? • Debate flows very similar to standard committees • Moderated and Unmoderated Caucuses are vital • Speakers Lists generally do not exist • Crises are introduced to the committees in order to alter the flow of debate and change the situation being discussed • Force delegates to adapt

  17. Why Does Crisis Matter? • Crisis is best suited to more experienced delegates • Allows delegates to hone their speaking skills in situations that can change in an instant • In historically based crisis committees, delegates get to delve into and re-enact important past events

  18. Crisis Structure

  19. Staff Duties • USG of Crisis • Oversees all committees and staff members in order to make sure everything runs smoothly • Crisis Directors • Take personal charge over a single committee and plan out crises • Crisis Staffers • assist in planning and crisis logistics • introduce crises to committees

  20. Joint Crisis: 1960 Presidential Election • John F. Kennedy’s Campaign vs. Richard Nixon’s Campaign • Delegates will work as campaign staffers to ensure their candidate wins the election • Overcome inevitable obstacles and potential scandals • Make sure their candidate sends the right message to the American people

  21. Joint Crisis: 1960 Presidential Election • This scenario has several unique factors • The first televised debate occurred in this election, so delegates will have to prepare their candidates for a filmed debate performance • With the American people growing wary of the Soviet Union, which candidate can ensure American dominance and deal with Soviet aggression?

  22. Joint Crisis: Year 2295 • Earth Colonial Coalition vs. The Callistonian Insurrection • A completely original, futuristic joint committee • designed by USG of Crisis Nicky Kumar • Delegates will fight a war and engage in diplomacy in a universe where all modern political concepts no longer apply • Background Guide will include a rich and unique back-story for delegates to understand the new world government that exists in 2295

  23. Joint Crisis: Year 2295 • Delegates will represent members of the President’s Cabinet and Insurrection’s Command Staff • Earth Colonial Coalition’s Goals: • Defeat Insurrectionists using both military and economic methods and annihilate its command structure • Restore peace and order throughout colonies disrupted by the Insurrection • CallistonianInsurrection’s Goals: • Liberate planets from the Coalition by any means necessary • Spread their own political and religious ideals throughout the numerous colonized star systems • Take direct control over several systems and crush the Coalition

  24. Joint Crisis: Year 2295 • A futuristic committee provides many unique opportunities • Assuming unique roles with personal motives allow delegates to negotiate through many channels • Portfolio Powers (actions that can be taken by a single delegate without committee approval will be utilized) • An open ended scenario means delegates will be less influenced by history and will make their own decisions to see a completely unique story and outcome • Creativity is key to any Crisis committee • Futuristic committees encourage delegates to find solutions with more outside-of-the-box ideas

  25. Exciting, Fast-Paced Committees! • A hard-working Crisis Staff • Preparation on these committees has already begun and the USG of Crisis is extremely excited to bring these experiences to HAMUN delegates • We can’t wait to run these next year, and we hope you are equally thrilled for your delegates to participate in them!
