Maranatha Community Transformation Center's integration project aimed to bridge the cultural gap between African immigrant parents and the Dutch educational system, eliminating conflict and fostering better communication for the benefit of their children's education.

MCTC INTEGRATION PROJECTSOLUTION TOCHILD & PARENTAL CULTURAL/EDUCATIONAL CONFLICT • What was the Target Group? • South of Sahara African immigrants living in Amsterdam Southeast. • 65% of the population of Amsterdam Southeast are immigrants from 140 nations. ( Total population 80,000 2007 National Burea of Statistic) • Business and Religious uniqueness ? .

MCTC INTEGRATION PROJECTSOLUTION TOCHILD & PARENTAL CULTURAL/EDUCATIONAL CONFLICT • Poor assessment of the immigrant children’s educational capabilities. • Poor communication between Parents and Schools • Poor Communication between Parents and Children • Deep Cultural gap between the immigrant’s home and the Dutch Schools. • Different expectation from both the Teachers and the Parents. • Conflict between the parents and immigrant children • Identity Crisis among the immigrant children

MCTC INTEGRATION PROJECTSOLUTION TOCHILD & PARENTAL CULTURAL/EDUCATIONAL CONFLICT • What were the goals of the Project? • To Bridge the Cultural gap between the parents and the Dutch Educational system • To eliminate the cultural conflict between the immigrant parents and their children • To stimulate participation of the immigrant parents in the educational process and development of their children • To help the Dutch Teachers understand and appropriately deal with the immigrant parents and their children.

MCTC INTEGRATION PROJECTSOLUTION TOCHILD & PARENTAL CULTURAL/EDUCATIONAL CONFLICT • What were the specific topics addressed in this Project? • Dutch Educational System • Intercultural Communication • Child upbringing in the Dutch Culture • Differences between the Dutch and the African culture • The danger of living in isolation without integration/The opportunity of integration

MCTC INTEGRATION PROJECTSOLUTION TOCHILD & PARENTAL CULTURAL/EDUCATIONAL CONFLICT • What were the expected results? • The evaluation of the project showed a great improvement in the participants’ understanding of the problem between them and their children, the gap between the African culture and the Dutch culture and the Dutch educational system. • There was increase in the participation of the parents in the parents/teachers meeting, school programs etc.
