  1. Ο Σπανός και οι σαράντα δράκοι. Spanos and the forty dragons. A Cyprus folk tale. Pictures: Grade C’2(third) Story in Greek: E´2 Story in English: St´1

  2. A green and happy village in Cyprus.

  3. Forty dragons, who lived nearby, wanted the river's water for themselves so they cut the flow of the river.

  4. The villagers decide to send Spanos (who had no beard or any hair on his hands and legs-that is what his name means), who boasted that he was the bravest man in the village, to kill the dragons.

  5. The story in Greek language and writing.

  6. The story in English • Once upon a time there was a small village in Cyprus. This village was very beautiful. It was full of life. Villagers were very happy and they were full of liveliness! • Nearby the village there was an old castle! In that castle lived forty dragons. These dragons wanted to have all the water for them and so they cut the flow of the river. Villagers were very unhappy.

  7. In the village there lived a man called Spanos who boasted that he was the bravest man in the world. He didn’t have any beard or any hair on his hands and legs. • Villagers said to Spanos that if he killed the forty dragons who cut the flow of the river, they would be sure that he was the bravest man in the world.

  8. Spanos agreed and he took his bag, in which he put a piece of fresh anari (Cyprus cheese) and some ash. • Now dear friends it is your time to finish the story. • Have fun!!!!
