  2. Executive Office of the President • Made up of 6 separate organizations • White House Staff • National Security Council • Office of Management and Budget (OMB) • Council of Economic Advisers • National Economic Council • Vice President

  3. 1st White House Staff • 1st POTUS George Washington • Did not have a receptionist • Had to hire his own nephews to be his personal assistants • Paid them out of their own pocket.

  4. Today’s White House Staff • Appointed by the POTUS • Does not need Senate approval • Led by Chief of Staff • Rahm Emanuel • Runs the White House • Keeps POTUS on schedule

  5. Other Staff Members • Assistant Chief of Staff • Jim Messina • Does everything Chief of Staff tells him too. • Manages Senior Advisors to POTUS

  6. Other Staff Members • Senior Advisors • David Axelrod • Valerie Jarret • Work with POTUS daily on national issues

  7. Other Staff Members • Press Secretary • Robert Gibbs • Works as voice of the White House • Works with the press

  8. Coolest Job in White House • President’s Body Man • Reggie Love • Right hand man to POTUS

  9. Other Staff Members • Presidential Speech Writer • John Favreau • 28 years old • Writes most speeches for the POTUS • Most famous for Obama’s First Inauguration Speech

National Security Council (NSC) • Led by military leader Joint Chiefs of Staff • Advisor to the Secretary of Defense and all branches of military • Set up in 1947 • Goal is to improve coordination agencies dealing with national security: • Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) • State Department • Led by Hillary Clinton • Defense Department • Led by Robert Gates

  11. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) • Key tool for POTUS • Why? • They control all of the money for budgets. • OMB’s #1 Job • Figure out the annual budget for the government!

  12. Council of Economic Advisors • Set up in 1946 • Gives POTUS economic advice • 3 member staff of economists • Try to warn POTUS of any changes in: • American economy • World economy • How do they know what to watch for? • The Stock Market!

  13. National Economic Council • Set up in 1993 by Pres. Clinton • Monitors and advises POTUS on • U.S. trade • Industry

  14. Vice President • Usually given a role over a specific policy area. • VP Biden • Works on American Recovery Act • AKA Bailout • Wants to see economic prosperity

  15. Tomorrow…POTUS’s Cabinet
