  2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • To develop the ability to summarise from non-fiction extracts • To improve close reading skills

  3. In the extended paper you need to know how to summarise from an extract and put key details in your own words.... Question 3 tests this ability. TOP TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE SUMMARISING: • Read the passages carefully. Highlighting key information that you will be summarising. • Write in an informative style- You are giving a factual summary • DO NOT WRITE A NARRATIVE OR IN THE FIRST PERSON • Do NOT quote phrases from the passages. You must use YOUR OWN WORDS!! • You must be CONCISE in your answer, you need to get as many points as possible into a few lines! • If you are doing the Extended paper you must NOT write more than one side of average handwriting.

Examples of summary questions MOCK EXTENDED PAPER -QUESTION 3 Summarise: • The reasons children are not as adventurous today, as described in Passage B • The dangers Bear Grylls faced, as described in Passage A. Use your own words as far as possible. You should write about 1 side in total, allowing for the size of your handwriting. Up to fifteen marks will be available for the content of your answer, and up to five marks for the quality of your writing. (20 Marks) (21 minutes)

  5. TO ACHIEVE BAND 1- THE TOP GRADE • Both parts of the summary need to be well focused on the passage and the question. • All points expressed clearly, concisely and fluently and in your own words.

STARTER- SUMMARISING PRACTICE Summarise these three sentences taken from non- fiction articles in your own words: • Football calls itself the beautiful game, and condemns teams and individuals whose play fails to conform to required standards of beauty. • Yesterday was a bad day for the worst off in Britain. • Money is something people can easily be obsessed with.

SUMMARISING PRACTICE QUESTION JUNE 2013 Extended Paper Summarise: • The hardships of the living conditions, as described in Passage B; and • The dangers of walking in Alaska, as described in Passage A. Use your own words as far as possible. Aim to write no more than one side in total, allowing for the size of your handwriting. (20 marks) (42 MINUTES)

SUMMARISING PRACTICE QUESTION November 2012 EXTENDED PAPER Summarise: • What the Kalahari expedition offers a traveller, as described in Passage B • The challenges and potential problems faced by visitors to the rainforest, as described in Passage A Use your own words as far as possible. Aim to write no more than one side in total, allowing for the size of your handwriting. (20 marks) (42 MINUTES)

  11. PLENARY • Go through the Model answers as a group found in the examiner reports for the Extended 2013 and 2012 papers. • Write down three key bullet points on how best to answer a summarising question
