  1. A school of engineering • for more and better engineers • for Danish industry and business

  2. Regional distribution of engineers • Engineering education in Denmark? • a fragmented sector • diploma total • 5 universities 60% 85 % • 2 engineering colleges 35% 13 % • 1 university college 5 % 2 % • add to that • 10 new business academies • Characteristics: • regional differences • weak coordination 90 80 70 60 Diplom Regionalt employed engineers 50 Civil 40 Ph.d. 30 20 10 0 Sjælland Danmark Hovedstad Nordjylland Midtjylland Syddanmark proportion of cohort 1980-2008, with engineering degree 4,5 4 3,5 3 Civil 2,5 % Diplom ph.d 2 I alt 1,5 1 0,5 0 1980 1985 1990 1995 2000 2003 2008

  3. Undersupply of engineers in Denmark! • therefore we must • train more engineers, and • train better engineers to • support growth in Denmark OECD at a Glance, 2007

  4. historically: universities: Bohr quadrant colleges: Edison quadrant science civil engineering diplom use inspired no yes new knowledge new technology fundamental understanding No Yes existing existing knowledge technology

  5. The outlook is challenging? • extrapolating demography and historical demand for engineers • undersupply until 2025 • increased emphasis on analytical skills in addition to practical skills • also with soft-skills • and entrepreneurial skills as well • ASE is established to challenge this outlook • ”one size does not fit all” – in Århus the “Århus way”

  6. Aarhus School of Engineering:a collaboration between IHA & AU • to new units have been established • ASE: Aarhus School of Engineering • an engineering school with a full spectrum of advanced engineering studies • includes all engineering studies in Århus • CASE: Center of Applied Science and Engineering • et Fraunhofer-like advanced research and development center • focus on state-of-the-art applied science and engineering • ASE and CASE to be localized in the Århus engineering clusters! ∫ (au + ) d(as,eng) = ASE

  7. A total of 45.000 m2 new buildings for engineering, marine technology and innovation biomedical electronics & ICT IT INCUBA Science Parks process technology biotechnology applied science energy civil engineers mechanical engineers marine and technical engineering

  8. ASE engineering studies Master (civil, kandidat) programmer (AU) Biomedical technology Biosystems technology civil engineering applied mechanics Optics and Electronics Process technology Geotechnology Information technology Diploma programs (IHA) Bioprocess engineering civil (B) engineering Building design electronics engineering mechanical engineering Information technology Health technology Technical bachelors (AU) Biotechnology Geotechnology Chemistry and technology New studies (since 2002)

  9. ASE: basic conditions • distinct engineering profiles • employability • r&D diploma engineers • R&d master engineers (“kandidat”) • et strong industrially oriented • PhD. program • diploma → master admission • guiding admissions requirements • admission procedure- novel • aim is 35 % transition • master studies • ~50 % external recruitment • ~15 % AU-technical bachelors • ~35 % diploma engineers ASE statistics and prognosis for 2015 +45 %

  10. ASE – engineering studies • Basic studies and elite studies • ASE basic studies (diploma engineer) • focus on admission, social mobility and career paths • development- and research based • focus on full Bologna structure {work or further studies} • ASE master studies (“civilingeniør” ) • national and international admission, • state-of-the-art development and research based • strong ASE engineering brands, full employability on all levels • with a clear progression from development based to research based

  11. CASE • Engineering studies in a R&D environment • ASE to focus on engineering studies • strong conceptual foundation • the ability to act • the social preparedness • leadership committed to excellent teaching • ASE staff • main task is specialized teaching • intimate knowledge of industry and business • take part – together with students – in R&D in CASE • CASE: an applied science and engineering platform • industries preferred collaboration partner • engineering studies to be embedded into CASE R&D • CASE embedded in research activities in Aarhus University use inspired no yes science fundamental understanding NOj yes CASE erhverv/ industri

  12. ASE and the future? • The ASE-partners are committed to strengthen their collaboration. • The ASE-partners are well prepared to enter into a merger, • legislation permitting • with AU, NF (science faculty) as the parent organization • The ASE-partners prepare such action, legislation permitting, with an aim of • create an understanding of the vitality of the ASE concept to external stakeholders • internally to further harvest the advantages of the collaboration • IHA will work for “a letter of freedom” to be able to continue its progress • prepare for evaluation of present legislation in 2013-14 • continue modernization of its studies • vigorously strengthen development efforts • even enter into research activities - competition permitting
