Performance Objectives 1.      Try to identify the differences between formal and informal language. 2.      Learn to write an advertisement for yourself. 3.      Get acquainted with those expressions used to describe personality. 4.      Learn to write a letter of application. 5.      Get acquainted with the job interview. 6.      Learn to fill in a job application form. 7.      Try to identify points of view. 8.      Discuss the ideal occupation.

  2. Warm Up How do you feel about your life and work? • In general, there are three kinds of attitude: • positive attitude ( be happy with my life and work ) • e.g. I wouldn't change my job for anything. It suits me perfectly • in every way. • negative attitude ( feelings of boredom and a desire to earn money ) • e.g. I don’t like my job very much but it is essential to support my • family. • in between ( have both positive and negative aspects ) • e.g. I don’t like my job but the salary is good.

  3. Activity 1 Job Seeking • The key words and expressions in this part: •  flesh out (p343) -- to give a more complete account or • description of something.     e. g. Emily should have included these pieces of information • to flesh out her   argument. • bare bone (p343) – main idea / nature • Some abbreviations (p343): • BA – Bachelor / Bachelor of Arts • Cert. – certificate • TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language • CV – Curriculum Vitae / the Course of Life

After reading the three advertisements, you’re expected to • achieve the following: • Get the Bare Bone of each advertisement and know who is being • targeted. • Compare them and feel the difference of their linguistic features. Ad A we / you informal and conversational Ad B applicants should… straightforward and formal Ad C this / people / blossom emotional distant and more formal

  5. Activity 2 It Takes All Sorts In this part, by listening to a lecture, you’ll know the different types of personality and also get a main idea of the relation between the personality and the career.

  6. Some new words and expressions in this part: • * rigid (p348) -- strict, firm, stubborn. • *  manipulative (p348) -- influencing or controlling someone • to your advantage, often  without • their knowing it. •   * detached (p348) -- (of the mind, opinion)impartial, not • influenced by others; (of a house) not • joined to another on either side. • * jot down (p348) – write down briefly and hastily • * conscientious (p348) -- faithful

The nine types of personality: • the perfectionist • the giver • the performer • the romantic • the observer • the questioner • the epicure • the boss • the mediator Can you paraphrase each type? Please pay attention to the interchanges of them and maybe different personality fits for different jobs.

  8. Activity 3 Letters of Application • The information covered in a letter of application: • the place where he got the advertisement for a job • a copy of CV • a letter of recommendation • copies of relevant certificates • professional experience • some skills necessary

  9. The structure of a letter of application: • a statement of purpose and an introduction of general • background • professional experience • some skills desired by the employing units • personal interests • conclusion

  10. Activity 4 Interview In this part, through listening practice, you’re expected to grasp some expressions, also you can know some terms of a form in English. 1. Applying for a jobAre there any positions vacant in your company?     Do you have any job for a part-timer?     Have you got a job for a secretary?   I was wondering if you’ve any vacancies for temporary interpreter.

Stating what qualifications, experience and intentions you have     I’ve had five years’ experience of office work.     I got a degree in Literature and took a course in typing.     I’d prefer something secretarial.   I want a job with a vacation every year. 3. Dealing with the application    I'm quite satisfied with your qualifications.    I think you’ll make a good sales manager.    I wonder if you’d mind starting next month? I’m sorry there’re no such vacancies at present.

Activity 5 Unemployment • By doing an intensive reading of the Text on page361, you’re • required to grasp the following: • Some new words and expressions • *  redundancy (p364) --- being not needed.e. g. Redundancy among clerks is caused by the increasing use of computers. • *  dole (p364) --- (colloquial) weekly payment made under various Insurance Acts in Great Britain to an unemployed worker. • *  listless (p364) --- tired and weak, and lacking energy or interest. • * demoralise (p364)--- lessen or destroy the courage and self- respect.

  13. Free Talk What do you think of “Unemployment”? As we know, generally we consider the matter from two sides. Now you’re required to give your views from two sides, the positive and negative. You can use the vocabulary and expressions we met in the text.
