A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. • Cinderella lost her slipper. • Every complete sentence has two basic parts: a subject and a predicate. • The complete subject includes all the words that tell whom or what the sentence is about. • The complete predicate includes the verb and all the words that tell about the verb. 4. How do I find the complete subject and predicate? The prince searches for its owner. • To find the complete subject, ask who or what does something (or is something). • Who searches for its owner? The simple subject is the main word or words in the complete subject. • Descriptive words are not part of the simple subject. • The excited couple discussed their engagement at dinner. • One day, a fairy granted me three wishes. • Watch out! The simple predicate, or verb, is the main word or words in the complete predicate. • Percy Jackson battled the Minotaur. • Let’s go to the store. • A verb is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being. • A linking verb tells what the subject is. • An action verb tells what the subject does, even when the action cannot be seen. 10. A verb phrase is made up of a main verb and one or more helping verbs. • The princess had yawned loudly. • A main verb can stand by itself as the simple predicate of a sentence. • She and her sister talked for hours. (action) • The song was so long. (linking) Verb Phrases

11. Helping verbs help the main verb express action or show time. • The test might be hard. • Her visitor had been talking for hours. • He will have been talking all day. There can be more than one helping verb! Verb Phrases
