  1. Division A Sobczak Presentation

  2. Division is easy once you know the terms and the steps! Quotient Dividend Divisor The REMAINDER is the number left over when you are finished. The remainder is ALWAYS smaller than the divisor!

  3. Remember that in division, there are steps to follow. • Divide • Multiply • Subtract • Bring Down • Remainder Follow the steps and you’ll be fine!

  4. A trick to remember – think of division as a house and the steps are a family. 3 86

  5. The first step is to DIVIDE.Think of the D as Dad. 2 3 86 You can divide 8 by 3 TWO times. Three times is too high because 3x3 equals 9.

  6. The second step is to MULTIPLY.Think of the M as Mom. 2 3 86 6 Multiply 2 x 3 which equals 6.

  7. The third step is to SUBTRACT.Think of the S as Sister. 2 3 86 6 2 Subtract the 6 from the 8 which leaves 2.

  8. The fourth step is to BRING DOWN.Think of the B as Brother. 2 3 86 6 2 6 Bring down the 6. Now you are working with 26. NOW THE STEPS START ALL OVER!!

  9. Remember, the first step is to DIVIDE. 2 8 3 86 6 26 Remember that you need to ask how many times can 26 be divided into 3 groups. The answer is 8 because 8x3 is 24. This is as close as you can get to 26 without going over. 9 is too high because 9x3 is 27.

  10. Remember, the second step is to MULTIPLY. 2 8 86 3 6 26 24 You multiply 8 x 3 which is 24. Put it below the 26.

  11. Remember, the third step is to SUBTRACT. 2 8 3 86 6 26 24 2 Subtract 24 from 26 which leaves 2.

  12. Now you have to see if there are any more numbers to BRING DOWN. 2 8 3 ? 86 NOPE 6 26 24 2 There are no more numbers to bring down so we go directly to the final step…

  13. The final step is to put the REMAINDER on top. Think of the R as Rover, the dog. 2 8 R 2 3 86 6 26 24 2 Once you are finished, you check it by multiplying the quotient by the divisor and then add the remainder.

  14. So, remember the steps… Divide Multiply Subtract Bring Down Remainder

  15. Once you know the steps, you can do any division problem! 968 4 729 3 5 845 2 389 538 7
