Before We Read  The Horror Genre The original horror fiction was established by the classic short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Dracula, and The Picture of Dorian Gray.  In the 1970s, Stephen King came on the scene and set the stage for what horror was to become in the eighties and early nineties.  Almost overnight, King's brand of fiction became a multi-million dollar industry.  Horror can deal with the mundane or the supernatural, with the fantastic or the normal. It doesn't have to be full of ghosts, ghouls, and things to go bump in the night.  Its only true requirement is that it elicits an emotional reaction that includes some aspect of fear or dread.  What makes horror literature so pervasive is that its need to evoke the necessary atmosphere and sense of emotional dread is utterly dependent on who we are as readers -- as people. 

9. Stephen King What King fears most is that thin line between good and evil. Of what are you most afraid?  New York Times bestselling novelist who made his name in the horror and fantasy genres with books like Carrie, The Shining, and IT.  Much of his work has been adapted for film and TV.  King’s work is largely known for its panic-inducing plots.  His books have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television shows, and comic books. King has published 54 novels, including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman and six non-fiction books. He has written nearly 200 short stories, most of which have been collected in book collections.
