  2. WORLD AIDS DAY • A global day of action on HIV and AIDS • A day to get the facts on HIV & AIDS • A day to show support for people living with HIV & AIDS • A day to get involved

  3. WHAT IS HIV ? Human Immuno-deficiency Virus A virus that damages the immune system and reduces the ability to fight off infections.

  4. WHAT IS AIDS ? Aquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome A later stage of HIV infection where someone develops potentially fatal infections and cancers.

  5. There is no cure for HIV. • There is no vaccine to prevent HIV infection. But:- • There are effective drug treatments help people living with HIV to have long and healthy lives. • These treatments help to prevent the development of AIDS related illnesses.

  6. HOW CAN SOMEONE BECOME INFECTED WITH HIV? • Unprotected sex (sex without a condom) • Sharing needles for injecting drugs • From mother to baby • You cannot become infected by: • Kissing, hugging or shaking hands • Sharing cups, glasses or knives and forks • Everyday social contact with someone who has HIV

  7. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY HIV & AIDS? In the world:- • 35 million people are living with HIV • 2.5 million new HIV infections each year • 35 million people have died from AIDS • 16 million children under 18 have been made orphans 2011 Report on the global AIDS epidemic (UNAIDS)

HIV/AIDS IN THE UK • 95,000 people living with HIV • Over 25% of those infected do not know they have HIV • 90% of all HIV infections are from having unprotected sexual contact • 5% of HIV infections are from sharing needles for drug taking • Only 1% of babies born to mothers who have HIV become infected

  10. THE HIV-HOP • You can’t get HIV from kissing, hugging or sharing drinks • You can’t get HIV from handshakes, high fives, smiles or winks • You can get HIV from having sex without using a condom • HIV prejudice is hateful, hurtful and discriminates

  11. WHAT YOU CAN DO: • Wear the red ribbon to show support for those living with HIV/AIDS • Be aware and educated about HIV/AIDS • Find out what’s going on and get involved • Challenge prejudice and stigma
