  1. Regional Forest Country Profiles for Central and Eastern European Countries (RFCP/CEEC) by Diana Pfeiffer, Consultant FAO/SEUR • Mandate FAO information gathering and dissemination • Gaps in policy relevant information (vs FRA & statistics) • Needs/requests by countries on forest policies • Data and information availability at national level • Forest policy analyses • DG briefs “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy

  2. Theoretical background: * FDCP ... FAO Forest Department Country Profiles “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy

  3. Overall structure is partly too specific to be applied for all countries, redundant categories Large number of information subjects are likely to confuse the user Relevant information that already is part of the FAO databases is not displayed in the FDCP yet (esp. TBFRA-2000) Why not stick with the FAO Forest department country profiles (RFCP) (1/2) ? “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy

  4. Focus frequently on specific aspect of forest management, e.g. production and forest resources; too specific country information Out of date information on production, trade and consumption Gaps on social and environmental benefits from forests, forestry services as well as policy institutions and instruments Why not stick with the FAO Forest department country profiles (RFCP) (2/2) ? “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy

  5. Objective of RFCP/CEEC: Collect and display... ... needed and available data and information ... ... focus on policies for forest management ... ... with relevance to CEE countries ... ... which are easily and widely accessible through an internet based portal “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy

  6. Criteria for selection of RFCP/CEEC information subjects (1/2): • Availability of reliable data and information; • Focus on key subjects with relevance to decision making on forest policy and the contribution of forest management to sustainable development; • No intention to present a “complete” set of all available information; “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy

  7. Criteria for selection of RFCP/CEEC information subjects(2/2): • Focus on the potential user: less detailed structure to less likely confuse the costumer; • No displaying of forest knowledge “niches”; • Provide as much as possible links to reliable data on external web sites that is regularly updatedweb  low maintenance of data “2nd 2nd Coordination Meeting on Monitoring and Reporting on Forest Policies and Institutions” 6 July 2007, Rome, Italy
