  2. EASTMAN AT OAK RIDGEDURING WORLD WAR IIHoward S. Young Talk given 11 Sep 2002 by HSY to the East Tennessee Section of The American Institute of Chemical Engineers Tennessee Eastman contributed in two major ways to the abrupt ending of the Second World War. First, it operated the huge Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge to produce the isotope of uranium known as U-235. This material was the explosive for the single atomic bomb that destroyed the center of the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. This bomb was by far the most powerful weapon that had ever been used in warfare. Eastman did its work as part of the enormous Manhattan Project of the U. S. Army’s Corps of Engineers, that was the largest industrial project in the history of mankind, employing about 500,000 people.
