Poetry techniques are not confined to poetry – they are everywhere.

We use them and see them everyday.

They make us laugh and cry.

They make us hungry and scared.

They make us feel something and see pictures in our heads.

  • The use of words with matching sounds, usually at the end of each line.

  • Rhyming adds to the rhythm which is the beat or pace of the words. It can be regular or irregular, slow or fast, depending on the effect the poet wants to create.
