  2. Executive Order 94 - Changes • Workplace Safety and Employee Health • All executive branch departments, agencies, and institutions of higher education shall: • Ensure that job expectations are clearly defined • in the employee work profile to include physical requirements

  3. Value of Physical Demands • Facilitate RTW (transitional or full duty) • Retain valued experienced employees • Identify prognosis for RTW • Reduce costs related to disability • Assists panel physicians with RTW decisions • Assure new hires understand physical demands of a job

  4. Step 1 – Determine Job Functions • Review existing EWP (Page 1-2) • Confirm job information is current • Identify all components of job

  5. Step 2 – Verify Job Functions • Verify tasks are being performed • Obtain understanding of work flow • Identify relationship of position to other positions in the department

  6. Step 3 – Identify Job Function • Break down the functions • Determine tasks and subtasks • Quantify the duration • Consider timing the task • Consider calculating the percent of time • Consider counting the cycles or repetitions

  7. Step 4 – Quantify Physical Demands of Job Objectively measure the intensity, frequency and duration of physical functions. Measuring instruments may include: Weight Scale Stop Watch Tape Measure Push-Pull Gauge Grip gauge Video Camcorder

  8. Step 5 –Document physical demands • Consider using the physical demands worksheet as a tool to assist with summarizing information on physical demands

  9. Lifting Standing Walking Carrying Bending Squatting What are Physical Demands? Activities that require an employee to physically exert energy to perform a task • Crawling • Reaching • Sitting • Driving • Pushing • Pulling

  11. Essential vs. Marginal Essential – Things you must be able to do in order to perform your job Marginal – Physical demands that are not required in order to be able to perform your job *Note – Consult with HR staff as these are very technical terms

  13. Job Function—Lifting Mail • What lifting was required? • What did the objects weigh? • What was the maximum weight lifted? • How frequently does the function occur i.e. one time a day? two hours a day? all day?
