  1. An English Settlement at Jamestown Section 2 (A) Notes

  2. English Settlers Struggle • Colonization • Funded by joint-stock companies • Stock holders kept 4/5 of gold & silver • King kept 1/5 of gold and silver • The Virginia Company • 150 settlers reached the shores of Virginia in 1607 • Established Jamestown in honor of their king

  3. A Horrible Start The colonists and their leader, John Smith, got off to a terrible start They got diseases They didn’t have enough food Unaccustomed to hard work, many refused to do manual labor

  4. John Smith Takes Control Smith proclaimed that those who don’t eat – don’t work. He also persuaded the Powhatan Indians to help by providing food. After Smith was badly burned and had to return to England, relations with the Indians soured, people stopped working again and famine set in.

  5. Jamestown Rebounds More settlers arrived New leaders made sure everyone worked The colonists planted tobacco, which was highly profitable.

  6. Tobacco Europeans were introduced to tobacco after Columbus returned from the West Indies. In 1612, John Rolfe developed a new high quality tobacco. By the late 1620s, the colonies were exporting more than 1.5 million pounds of “brown gold” back to England.

  7. The Colonies Needed Workers • The headright system lured settlers to Jamestown. • Those who paid passage got 50 acres of land. • Indentured Servants • In exchange for passage, the indentured servant had to work for his sponsor for 4 – 7 years. • African American Laborers • The first slaves arrived in 1619. • A decline in indentured servants caused the colonists to import more and more slaves.
