  1. Smog and Acid Rain Chapter 19 Section 1

  2. - in addition to essential gases, the air you breathe also contains pollutants, which are harmful substances that contaminate the environment 1. Why should we be concerned about air pollution? 2. primary pollutants - pollutants released directly into the air in a harmful form 3. secondary pollutants - pollutants not released directly into the air, but form in the atmosphere

  3. -originally a combination of smoke and fog 4. smog 5. photochemical smog - a brown-green haze that forms in cities when nitrogen dioxides react in sunlight 6. How does nature play a part in the formation of smog? • winds disperse pollutants that cause smog • landforms, like basins and mountains, can trap pollutants

  4. -warm air overlies cool air - the cool air trapped near Earth’s surface causes pollutants to accumulate 7. temperature inversion

  5. stands for potential hydrogen • used to show how acidic or basic a substance is • less than 7 = acid • greater than 7 = base • equal to 7 = neutral 8. pH scales

  6. -precipitation with a pH less than 5.6 9. acid rain -power plants- burn coal and oil to produce electricity - burning fossil fuels- transportation and heat 10. sources of acid rain

  7. -discolor painted surfaces • corrode metals • damage concrete structures 11. effects of acid rain
