  2. 1. “Used to” (or “would”) • Expresses the idea that something happened repeatedly in the past. • todos los días • cada día • siempre • frecuentemente • a menudo • nunca • de niño • de pequeño • cuando era niño Just to name a few.

  3. 2. For describing in the past… • people – Mi abuela era simpatica. • places – Su casa tenía un jardin. • situations – Había muchos arboles. • location – Mis primos estaban allí tambien. • physical/mental/emotional states – Estaba contenta.

  4. 3. To express was/were - ing • Yo dormía cuando mi gato me atacó. (preterite after the “cuando”) • You can also do this by saying “estaba –ando/-iendo”. (Literally “was” + “ing”) • Yo estaba durmiendo cuando mi gato me atacó.

  5. 4. To tell the… in the past • date – Era el cuatro de julio de 1776. • time – Eran las ocho. • weather – Hacía mucho calor en la playa. • age – Tenía diez años en dos mil.

  6. 5. Two events occur simultaneously • you will often use the word “mientras” with this • La profesora dormía mientras los estudiantes escribían apuntes.

  7. 6. Setting up a scene • Give background details of an event. • This could tell what was happening when something else occurred.

  9. 1. Completed action in the past • Action has clear beginning and end. NO DOUBT that it’s over. • Comí la manzana. • La prueba fue fácil. • Estuve en la biblioteca por tres horas. • Expressions that refer to the completed past:

  12. 3. Interruption • An action that interrupts another one that was already going on • the going on action is in imperfect • the interruption is in the preterit • Caminaba cuando me caí.
