  1. The Challenge of Germplasm Exchange Luciano Nass Forum 2014: Agricultural InnovationMKTPlace 9th, April – 2014 Brasilia, DF

  2. Agriculture = big change... From Collectors/Hunters to farmers!

  3. Gradually, we domesticated plants and animals based on our needs

  4. = + New type of Collector Beginning of plant genetic resource efforts Vavilov´s expeditions around the world showed the importance of diversity to genetic breeding.

  5. Germplasm Exchange WHY ? • There is no country self-sufficient in genetic resources • New pests (insects and diseases) • Climate Change • Preventive Breeding • Existing variability is not enough

  6. Germplasm Exchange HOW ? • Look for what you really need • Interesting sources: • CGIAR Centers (http://www.cgiar.org) • EURISCO (http://eurisco.ecpgr.org/) • GENESYS (https://www.genesys-pgr.org) • ARS/USDA (http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/) • Be prepared to give something back, because it is an exchange! • Give feedback to the genebank manager – it is important

  7. Germplasm Exchange Sharing a successful experience • Labex Genetic Resources = presence in US • Brazil imported the US soybean collection = 23.000 accessions • Brazil imported the US rice collection = 17.000 accessions • USA and Brazil = different rules

  8. Brazil: Germplasm Exchange Embrapa : intercambioquarentena@cenargen.embrapa.br

  9. Germplasm Exchange Major Challenges we faced • Justify why we requested the entire collections (soybean and rice) • Availability of seeds and sample preparation (time) • Quarantine (need to be very well planned in advance)

  10. Germplasm Exchange Final Remarks • Germplasm Exchange is IMPORTANT!!! • It is possible • It is bureaucratic (phytosanitary certificate, legislations) • Institutions – experience and capacity • Benefits are well recognized • MKTPlace – if the project includes germplasm exchange • start dialogue ASAP

  11. Thank you! Luciano.Nass@embrapa.br
