  3. Industry Supporters

  4. Industry Supporters

  5. The Problem

  6. Why Power and Energy Engineering? • Want to tackle challenges, solve problems, make a difference and save the world? • Join thousands of power and energy engineers who are developing solutions to our biggest energy challenges—green energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, the Smart Grid • Power and energy engineers work with some of today's most exciting technologies, developing solutions to problems that affect our lives and lifestyles

  7. The Problem • Over the next decade, almost 62% of the industry has the potential to retire or leave for other reasons • At the same time, demand for qualified power engineers is projected to increase • This path is not sustainable

  8. US Workforce Survey: Age Distribution • Survey Participants • 55 Electric & Gas Utilities • All Electric Cooperatives • ~ ½ of all US electric & combination utility employees • Done in 2007, 2008 & 2009 • Engineers that may need replacement by 2014 ~51% Source: Center for Energy Workforce Development -- Gaps in the Energy Workforce Pipeline Survey

  9. The Need

  10. The Need • A highly skilled workforce that is: • Excited about solving problems and improving our energy infrastructure • Looking for a challenging and rewarding career in the power and energy field • Ready to meet the growing demand for our power and energy needs • Prepared with a practical, hands-on career experience

  11. The Need: Skills • Basic electrical and electric power engineering • Electronics, load flow, short circuit, stability, transients • Communications • Physical media, protocols, info models, networks, traffic analysis • Distributed Computing / Intelligence / Complex Systems • Software, agent based computing, local automation, stochastic processes • Security • Physical and cyber • Systems of Systems Engineering • Integration, control theory, reliability, stability, security • Enterprise Architecture • Databases, Service Oriented Architecture • Business, Economics, and Regulation • Understanding the business, cost/benefit, business case • People Skills • Internal to break down silos, external to understand customer needs

  12. The Solution

  13. The Solution: Workforce Collaborative Report Workforce Collaborative Report Published April, 2009 Recommended doubling the number of power engineering graduates and providing scholarships Influential in $100M DOE stimulus education allocation

  14. The Solution • Provide students: • Financial assistance • Hands-on career experience • Help industry recruit top candidates from the finest engineering programs in the U.S. • Give young engineers the tools to connect with potential employers • Provide mentoring opportunities from current experts while available • Designed to complement and not compete with existing programs

  15. PES Scholarship Plus Initiative™

  16. PES Scholarship Plus Initiative ™ • Receive up to $7,000 in financial support before graduation: • $2,000 1st year • $2,000 2nd year • $3,000 3rd year* • Assistance in getting up to 2 years of power engineering career experience before graduation • One free year of membership in the world’s largest and oldest technical association – IEEE and its Power and Energy Society • Can participate in a mentoring program which connects students to experts *For applicants awarded in their first year of college

  17. PES Scholarship Plus Initiative™ Requirements

  18. PES Scholarship Plus Initiative™ Requirements • Applicants must be: • U.S. citizen or permanent resident  • Currently enrolled at an accredited university or community college • A full-time undergrad student in the coming academic year • Working on (or planning to work on) an ABET-accredited electrical engineering undergraduate bachelor’s degree • Considering a career in power and energy engineering • Willing to participate in a career experience (internship, coop, summer research) • Attending a university/college that offers undergrad courses in power engineering • Planning to take at least three of these power engineering courses (total of nine+ credits) • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B) at current college or university

  19. The Importance of Career Experiences • Learn about the work of power and energy engineers and to get visibility to potential employers • Required for Scholarship renewal in years 2 and 3 • Career Experience can be gained in a number of ways • Internships • Co-ops • Power-related summer research • The Initiative will assist individuals in their own efforts to find career experiences! • PES Careers is a free IEEE PES online resource that connects power engineering students seeking career experiences with industry

  20. Career Experience • Required for renewal • Can be arranged by awardee or through PES-Careers platform • PES-Careers is an online resource that connects students seeking career experiences with industry for up to one year after graduation • Assistance will provided to awardees having trouble finding career experiences* *In certain cases the requirement may be waived

  21. Basic Commitment for a student • Willingness to explore power and energy engineering as a career • Obtain relevant career experiences • Take course work on power and energy engineering subjects • Look for opportunities to learn about the industry (such as through industry presentations and mentoring) • No penalties if the student decides not to pursue a power and energy engineering career • This is all about the student seeing the exciting opportunities in power and energy engineering!

  22. Selection Criteria

  23. Selection Criteria • Academic performance • Alignment of technical and personal interests with the power engineering field • Personal strengths, such as: • Volunteer activities • Work experience • Endorsement letter • Strength of academic program (based on the institution’s overall power engineering courses and the courses you may take)

  24. Where & When to Apply

  25. Where & When to Apply • Applying is easy at www.ee-scholarship.org • Deadline for applications and renewals is June 30, 2013 • Awardees will be notified in September 2013 • The application period is open March through June

  26. PES Scholars

  27. 2012/13 - PES Scholars • Over 1,200+ students from over 150 U.S. universities participated in the application process • 368 Total Applicants • 228 PES Scholars from 100 U.S. Universities • 104 Seniors • 77 Juniors • 47 Sophomores • $456,000 in scholarships to be distributed

Estey Outstanding Scholars • Distributed to the outstanding PES Scholar in each Region: • Ross Beppler, Clemson University – Junior - Region 3 (Southeast USA) • Nicholas Coleman, Drexel University – Senior - Region 2 (Mid-Atlantic USA) • Stephen Collins, University of Southern California – Junior - Region 6 (Western USA) • Eric DePinto, Colorado School of Mines – Junior -Region 5 (Southwest USA) • David Hiskens, University of Michigan – Junior -Region 4 (Mid-Western USA) • Andrew Klem, Clarkson University – Junior -Region 1 (Northeast USA)

  29. PES Scholars - Testimonials • For one, it has eased the financial burden of attending a highly ranked engineering university. Additionally, it has reinforced the notion that pursuing a career in power engineering is attainable. • Knowing there are options after attaining an engineering degree inspires the hope which fuels the late night study sessions, the struggle to juggle all aspects of an incredibly busy life, and the general motivation to push through the difficult days. • Being named a PES Scholar means that a group of individuals believe that I have the potential to become a leader in the electrical engineering world, which gives me confidence in my abilities as I enter the working world upon graduation. • Power engineering is a field with exponentially growing opportunities. Being part of the PES Scholar program has allowed me to integrate myself to this field and have a great sense of pride. The support from IEEE PES provides the momentum to achieve anything in this field. I highly recommend this scholarly program to all power engineering students. • The absolute best part about receiving the PES Scholarship for me is the access to the PES Careers resource. I have found many exciting opportunities using this resource that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. I currently have multiple job offers at various companies in the power sector, most of which are a direct result of the PES Scholarship.
