  1. Cockles • By Lori and Julia Never underestimate the power of cockles!

  2. The Importance of Cockles • They filter one third of the salt-water that comes in estuaries. • They are food for a wide range of birds. • Cockles make up to 80% of all living things in most estuaries. • Cockles don’t live deeper than 7cm below the sand.

  3. Where do they live? • They live in estuaries and beaches. • Estuaries are spawning grounds. • They live on the top layer of the sand. • Every three years volunteers hold a cockle count. • The number of cockles has decreased by more than half from 1976.

  4. Cockle Counting • 1. Put the metal square on the sand next to your marker. • 2.Dig down 7cm and remove all the sand and shells inside the square. • 3. Put everything you found in a sieve and wash away the sand leaving just the shells. • 4. Sort the live cockles from the empty shells, pipi, limpets and crabs • 5. Count and measure the live cockles. Make sure you don’t miss the very small ones. • 6. Mark the results on the tally sheet. • 7. Put the cockles back.

  5. How to save cockles? • Reduce green house gases. • Don’t litter. • Minimize the amount of cockles you eat. • Attend and volunteer for cockle counts. • Don’t squish the mollusc.
