  1. CLASSROOM GROUND RULES

  2. REACHING A CONSENSUS ON CLASSROOM GROUND RULES • Why do we work as a team to establish ground rules? Working as a team allows everybody to have a voice and feel as if they are a part of the organization • Define stakeholder Those who have an interest in the situation

  3. Who are the stakeholders in this class? Primary: teacher, students Secondary: parents, administrators, school board, community, business • What is a consensus? A general agreement; all members of a group are willing to accept a decision. Even though it might not be your first choice, you consider it a workable approach.

  4. A consensus is reached when all members of a group can say: • I believe you understand my point of view • I believe I understand your point of view • Whether or not I prefer this decision or not, I will support it because it was reached openly and fairly • Three questions that can be asked to see if there is general agreement are: • Does everyone accept this decision? • Is there any opposition to this decision? • Can everyone live with this decision?

  5. LIGHT VOTING Light voting is one way for reaching a consensus: • How does it work? Decide on the number of items you would like to include in your final list. Then allow each member of the team to vote that number of times. Select the top 3-5. Test the vote by asking the 3 general agreement questions.

  6. WHY DO WE HAVE RULES? • TO KEEP THINGS RUNNING SMOOTHLY • FOR LIMITATIONS AND BOUNDARIES • FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH • TO USE AS STANDARDS FOR THE NORM • TO INCREASE QUALITY • TO MAINTAIN FAIRNESS • TO PROVIDE COMFORT ZONE

  7. REASONS RULES MAY NOT BE FAIR • TOTAL CONTROL • MIGHT RESTRICT CREATIVITY • UNINFORMED

  8. SAMPLE GROUND RULES • PROFESSIONAL COURTESY • PUNCTUALITY • ATTENDANCE • PARTICIPATION

  9. WHY BRAINSTORM? • TO FOCUS A GROUP • TO HEAR EVERYONE’S IDEAS • TO COME UP WITH LOTS AND LOTS OF IDEAS • TO UNLEASH THE POWER OF THE MIND • TO DEVELOP POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

  10. BRAINSTORMING GUIDELINES • EVERYBODY PARTICIPATES • FOCUS ON A SINGLE ISSUE OR PROBLEM • WRITE DOWN ALL IDES SO THAT EVERYONE CAN SEE THEM • DON’T HOLD BACK IDEAS, EVEN IF THEY SEEM CRAZY • NEVER CRITICIZE OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS • IT’S OK TO HITCHHIKE(build on some else’s ideas) • NO DISCUSSION IS ALLOWED DURING THE BRAINSTORMING PHASE
