  1. History of NCYU National Chiayi University was established in February2000 by mergingtwo existing institutions in ChiayiNational Chiayi Institute of Technology(NCIT) andNational Chiayi Teachers College (NCTC). The mergermakesNational Chiayi University one of the fewcomprehensive universities insouthwest Taiwan, one thatcovers a wide range of domains, including LifeScience,Agriculture, Management, Science and Engineering,Humanities and Arts, and Education. The University’s history stretches back to the years of Japanese colonization on Taiwan. Its roots are in the best traditions of the Japanese colonial policy – Taiwan as an agricultural resource to Japan.

  2. Campuses The University owns four campuses and a 117.02-hectareexperimental forest, covering around 285.32 hectares intotal. TheLantan (Orchid Lake) campus is the main campuswhere theUniversity’s administration building is located.It lies between thefamous Orchid Lake and Jenyi2Reservoir amid more than 128.51hectares of lush woods.Colleges of Agriculture, Life Sciences, andScience &Engineering are located on this beautiful campus, witheach department housed in newly constructed buildingsthat are fullyequipped with teaching and learning facilities.The laboratories,factories, ranches, livestock farms, andveterinary hospital providestudents with ampleopportunities to combine theory with practice.Thestadium, sports field, swimming pool, gymnasium, andStudentActivity Center provide a broad spectrum ofrecreational programs.

  3. Campuses The Minghsiung Campus is located in a newly developedtownin Minghsiung, about 20.33 kilometers fromdowntown Chiayi. It isclose to Minghsiung Station andHighway 1. With an area of 19.93hectares, the campusaccommodates the College of Humanities andArts and theTeachers College, which consists of around 2000students.The campus used to be the main campus of NationalChiayiTeachers College and is complete with a library,labs, sports facilities,standard swimming pool, stadium,dormitories, concert hall, park, and beautiful pond. The Hsinming Campus has an area of 15.58 hectares and is located at the heart of Chiayi City. It is now being remodeled to accommodate the College of Management.

  4. Campuses The Linsen campus is located inChiayi City withconvenientaccess to public transportation.Its area covers4.86 hectares andaccommodates the Division ofContinuing and ExtensionEducation. Many trees andflowers line the campus roads andaround buildings,offeringpleasant views everywhere.Facilities includesports fields,swimming pool, music rooms,computerclassrooms, and twostudent dormitories, wherestudentscan exercise, relax, andpursue their intellectual desires.

  5. Academic Exchange and International Cooperation Since its establishment in 2000, National ChiayiUniversity(NCYU) has been actively engaged inglobalization. TheUniversity has built academicrelationships withuniversities in countries such asAustralia, Canada, France,Germany, Indonesia, Japan,Korea, New Zealand,Paraguay, the Philippines, theUnited Kingdom, and theUnited States, etc. Theseoverseas institutions include:

Graduate Study Type of Study Graduate studies at National ChiayiUniversity can only beundertakenin the hybrid form of course workand research.In each Departmententry you will find details of theprograms offered at present.Theprincipal graduate degrees areMaster’s and Ph.D. Inaddition,the following Faculties offer otherresearchdegrees. Doctoral Degree The Ph.D. degree is offered toresearchers andprofessionalswith a master’s degree from anyuniversityaccredited by thegovernment. A Ph.D. program isnormally completed in 2 to 7years.

  10. Graduate Study Master’s Degree A candidate for a master’sdegree requires a bachelor’sdegree in a related field, andmust pass a qualifyingexamination during the 4-yearmaster's degree program.

  14. Curriculum Programs and Courses The University requires graduate students to complete designated courses and a thesis under supervision. Graduate courses are categorized as: ■ General required courses ■ Optional courses recommended by Department or College

  15. Curriculum Grading Policy The University’s grading system isbased on a 100-pointscale. Forundergraduates, the minimumpassing grade is60; for graduatestudents, it is 70. No credits areearned if astudent receives afailing grade in a course. At least128course credits are required inorder to earn a bachelor’sdegree.Master’s and doctoral degreesrequire thecompletion of twentyfour credits and eighteen creditsrespectively.

  17. Foreign students are welcome tosubmit their applicationstograduate programs. The deadlinefor application is June30. Forgraduate programs, the applicantmust hold abachelor’s degree ormaster’s degree from an accrediteduniversity or college. The applicantis expected to have areasonablecommand of Chinese or English. Required items in your application pack: ■ Two copies of the application form with a recent photograph attached to each. ■ The highest-level certificate and transcript (must be translated into Chinese or English) issued by an international institution which is authenticated by a consulate or a representative of the Republic of China (Taiwan). There is a minimum grade point average (GPA) expectation of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for previously completed academic work.

Required items in your application pack: ■ Two letters of recommendation (at least one from teacher with Chinese language ability). ■ A health certificate (including HIV test and chest X-Ray). ■ A study proposal in Chinese or English. ■ Financial statement showing the amount of at least USD$2,000 deposit issued by a bank in the country the applicant is from. ■ Formal certificate of English tests (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc).

  21. Language Proficiency ■ All international students arestrongly encouragedto provideproofof either Chinese or Englishlanguage ability. Thefollowingcertificates aresuggested: ■ Chinese: TOP1 (Test OfProficiency-Huayu) ■ English: CEF B1 (ITP TOEFL457, CBT TOEFL137, iBTTOEFL47, IELTS 4, TOEIC 550) All test scores are considered validfor two years beyondthe test date.

  23. Time of Application Applicants seeking admission mustsubmit the applicationforms andother supporting documents byJune 30.Applications are goodonly for the Department or Instituteproposed. Applicants are stronglyadvised to submit theirapplicationsas early as possible and well beforetheclosing date to ensure timelyarrival of all necessarydocuments.Acceptance letters will be issued tothoseaccepted to the course.

  24. Types of Scholarships and Benefits

Scholarships ■Master’s Scholarships: Scholarships in the amount of NT$30,000 per month will be provided to qualified foreign students who want to pursue their Master’s degrees at universities/colleges in Taiwan. ■Ph.D. Scholarships: Scholarships in the amount of NT$30,000 per month will be provided to qualified foreign students who want to pursue their Ph.D. degrees at universities/colleges in Taiwan.

NCYU International Student Scholarship ■ Those who have not yetreceived any other scholarship inTaiwan. ■ Non ROC passport holders ■ Non full time employees, withan income under aset amount ■ Those not holding the status ofoverseas Chinese orPRCcitizenship ■ Enrolled in a minimum of 4credits per semester ■ GPA above 80

  27. NCYU International Student Scholarship The benefits and Obligations forthe NCYU Scholarshiprecipientsare: ■ The NCYU scholarshipincludes tuition, credit anddormitory waivers. Graduatestudents will receive astipend ofNT$6000 each month. ■ Students receiving theinternational scholarship areobliged to do part time teaching or research work (6hours perweek) in their department orinstitute.
