  • Every French noun has “gender” – masculine or feminine

    • If “un” is before the noun- masculine

    • If “une” is before the noun - feminine

The 96% Rule

  • The “96% Rule” refers to a way of determining if a noun is masculine or feminine

    • Feminine nouns usually end in “e”, “ette”, “ée”, “sion”, “tion”

    • Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant or a vowel other than “e”

    • When in doubt… LOOK IT UP!!!!!!

  • “des” (pronounced DAY) is used with all plural nouns to express the concept of “some”

    • Des frites - some fries

    • Des biscuits – some cookies

  • Plurals usually end in “s”
