  2. GRE The GRE is not a knowledge based test – the test makers do not care what you ‘know’ or right answers They CARE about your critical thinking skills and ability to problem solve The GRE Revised edition began August 1, 2011.

  3. Basic GRE Overview • The GRE now offers the ability to go back to previously answered questions within each section. • Only take it once every 60 days, instead of every 30. • Still in the experimental phase of the NEW Revised GRE 2010 Test GRE Scoring here

Basic GRE Overview • 2 Analytical Writing sections • 2 Quantitative • Quantitative Comparison • Problem Solving • Data Interpretation • 2 Verbal • Reading comprehension • Verbal reasoning • 2 Writing section • 1 experimental section that you can decline, but if you accept you are eligible to win a gift card • However, if you opt to do the section, you will not know which section is ‘experimental’

  9. Analytical Writing • Score 0-6 • Issue Essay – 30 minutes • Analyze an issue, supporting your position in response to specific instructions • Argument Essay – 30 minutes • Point out weakness or unsupported assumptions made by author

Quantitative • 35 minutes for each Quantitative Section for a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes • 3 types of questions within the section, in the order they will appear: • Quantitative Comparisions • Algebra, Proportions, Arithmetic, Set Properties, Geometry, Number Properties • 2. Problem solving – 5 multiple choice questions • Algebra, Proportions, Arithmetic, Set Properties, Geometry, Number Properties • 3. Data interpretation – look at graphs to interpret answers

Quantitative Strategies Kaplan Methods for Answering Quantitative Questions: • Picking Numbers – choose small numbers to obtain answer by plugging into given equations • Backsolving – use answer choices to get the answers • Strategic Guessing – process of elimination by evaluating answer choices • Estimation – eliminate incorrect answer choices

  13. Verbal Strategies Figuring out all 3 of the below before answering reading comprehension questions Roadmap of a Passage • Topic • Scope • Purpose They do not want to know if you know the details; they want to see if you can quickly answer questions from your assessment of the passage.

GRE Workshop General Information about GRE Registration • Register by phone Call 1-800-GRE-CALL you will be given a confirmation number, reporting time, and test center location. • Register by mail Complete the Authorization Voucher Request form found in the GRE registration bulletin found on the gre.org web-site. Mail in the voucher and allow 4 weeks for processing. When you receive your voucher, call to schedule an appointment.
