The analogy
The Analogy

  • It helps us use aptitudes and comprehensions from one scope of our experience, to give a new meaning to another life happening

  • Try to use images that are common to the client, or that respond to their preferred representational system

Using anecdotes parables and stories
Using Anecdotes, Parables and Stories

  • Anecdotes: “I knew a person that”, “A client once told me”, “Once I saw”

  • Anecdotes help the client work through anxieties and fears, or tough and denied experiences

  • Stories: “There once was a cat…” Movies, etc.

  • Stories help clients reconnect with their emotions and to “break the Ice”.

I know of a family that or i have a friend that
I know of a family that... OrI have a friend that...

  • Analogies with other clients, people or experiences, can introduce to the individual or family theory a kind of “Group Therapy Effect”, in which Universalization ingrains hope and a new way of looking at things; besides removing the “These things only happen to me” myth.

Metaphor through action
Metaphor through action

  • Physical action is a powerful way for analogies and metaphors to benefit

  • The Psychodramatic Techniques is based on these principles
