  1. Identifying the Elements of Plot What makes up a story?

  2. Story Grammar – Vocabulary we use to discuss a story • Plot • Rising Action • Protagonist • Antagonist • Setting • Climax • Narrator • Denouement

  3. PLOT Plot is what happens and how it happens in a narrative. A narrative is any work that tells a story, such as a short story, a novel, a drama, or a narrative poem. A narrator is the person telling the story.,

  6. 1. Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story.

  7. Details that describe: Scenery Weather Time of day Time of year Setting Time and place are where the action occurs

  8. Types of Characters • Protagonist • Antagonist

  9. 2. Rising Action • This part of the story that introduces the conflict or problem. A building of interest or suspense occurs.

  10. WHAT IS CONFLICT?! • Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces • Conflicts can be external or internal • External conflict- outside force may be person, group, animal, nature, or a nonhuman obstacle • Internal conflict- takes place in a character’s mind

  11. 3. Climax • This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

  12. 4. Falling Action • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

  13. 5. Denouement or Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending.
