  2. ♫♪ Jingle 3 The Noun Jingle ♪♫ This is a noun jingle, my friend. A noun jingle, my friend. You can shake it to the left And shake it to the right. Find yourself a noun. And then recite: A noun names a person. A noun names a thing. A noun names a person, Place, or thing. And sometimes an idea. Person, place, thing, idea! Person, place, thing, idea! So, shake it to the left, And shake it to the right. Find yourself a noun, And feel just right!

  3. ♫♪ Jingle 4 The Verb Jingle ♪♫ A verb, a verb. What is a verb? Haven’t you heard? There are two kinds of verbs: The action verb And the linking verb. The action verb Shows a state of action. Like stand and sit and smile. The action verb is always in motion Because it tells what the subject does. We stand! We sit! We smile! The linking verb shows a state of being. Like am, is, are, was, and were. Looks, becomes, grows, and feels. The linking verb shows no action Because it tells what the subject is. He is a clown. He looks funny.

  4. Grammar Time Reference 22 Noun, Subject Noun, and Verb NOUN AND SUBJECT NOUN 1. A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. A noun is a naming word. Words like teacher and Amanda name people. Words like library and river name places. Words like cat and truck name things. Animals are grouped in the category of things. Words like freedom and beauty name ideas. 2. The subject of a sentence tells who or what a sentence is about. Every sentence has a subject. Since a noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. A subject noun tells who or what a sentence is about. 3. A subject noun is labeled with the abbreviation SN. VERB 4. A verb tells what the subject does or what the subject is. Every sentence has a verb. Verbs that tell what people or things do are called action verbs. Girls walk. Girls play. Puppies walk. Puppies play. 5. A verb is labeled with the abbreviation V.

  5. Reference 23 The Question and Answer Flow The Question and Answer Flow is a series of questions and answers used to identify the parts of a sentence. 2. Classifying is naming or identifying each word in a sentence by using the Question and Answer Flow. As you classify the words of a sentence you will label each word with an abbreviation to identity its function. 3. To classify a subject noun in the Question and Answer Flow, ask the subject question to find the noun that serves a the subject of the sentence. The subject questions are who or what. Ask who if the sentence is aboutpeople. Ask what if the sentence in not about people, but about places, things, or ideas, Then, label the subject noun wit the abbreviation SN. 4. To classify a verb in the Question and Answer Flow, ask the verb question, what is being said about _________ (the subject) since the verb tells what the subject does. Then, label the verb with the abbreviation V.

  9. Reference 24 Pattern 1 The pattern, or core, of a sentence identifies the order of its main parts. A Pattern 1 has only two main parts as its core: a subject noun (SN) and a verb (V). A Pattern 1 sentence is identified with the abbreviations of its main parts and pattern number: SN V P1. It is also know as a noun-verb (N V) core. In the Question and Answer Flow, the pattern of a sentence is identified after all the words in a sentence have been classified. To identify a Pattern 1 sentence, say “Subject Non, Verb, Pattern 1” and write SN V P1 on the line in front of a Pattern 1 sentence.
