Essential Questions • What are the structures and functions in the male and female reproductive systems? • What is menstruation and the different stages involved? • How and where does fertilization occur? • What are the different stages in fetal development? • How can pregnancies be prevented? • What are STI’s and how can they be prevented?

  3. Day 1 – The Male and female reproductive systems • Required Readings: • 3.9 • Learning Objectives: • To define the term “sexual reproduction: • To know the steps involved in sexual reproduction • To describe the human reproductive systems

  4. Starter • What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction? What do these terms mean? • What are the gametes in the male and female? • How are gametes different from somatic cells? • Time: 5 minutes

  5. Activity 1 • We will watch a dissection of the male and female reproductive systems • As you watch, write down any questions you have • I will stop the video periodically if there are a lot of questions • You may leave at any point if you feel uncomfortable • This video shows the dissection of cadavers, as well as live models so you can see where the different organs are located

  6. Activity 2 • Discussion & answers to questions

  7. Day 2: The menstrual cycle • Required Readings: • 3.10 • Learning Objectives: • To understand the female monthly cycle of ovulation • To know the role of hormones in the menstrual cycle • To describe the sequence of events in follicle development and ovulation

  8. Starter • Describe the route sperm takes from production to fertilization of an egg • Time: 10 minutes

  9. Activity 1 • Complete the “Menstrual Cycle” questions and labeling with your group • Time: 20 minutes

Activity 2 • Create a poster that depicts what happens with the following during the menstrual cycle: • Hormones • Uterine wall lining • Follicle development • Body temperature • Use the “time in cycle” and “what happens” cut-outs as a guide for what is happening in the phases • Time: 40 minutes

  11. Activity 3 • Work with your group to organize the order of events during the menstrual cycle

  12. Closing & homework • Complete the menstrual cycle quiz • Due: Monday, April 15

  14. Day 4: Misconceptions & Myths • Required Readings: • None • Learning Objectives: • To correct any misconceptions about the reproductive system • To learn common myths about the reproductive system

  15. starter • Questions from video: • More than 1 sperm fertilizing an egg? • Stem cells? • Why can animals walk after birth, but not humans? • Identical twins closer relationship than fraternal twins? • Can you have sex when you’re pregnant? Will this make you get pregnant again? • If the mother is depressed during pregnancy, can this affect the baby? • What happens if the baby doesn’t like the taste of the food the mom eats? • Can you poop when you are pregnant? Will the baby come out if you push with too much force? • Do babies breathe inside the womb? • Stepping reflex – kicking? • Sleeping position of mother • What happens if the baby stays too long in the womb? • Time: 10 minutes

Common Myths • You can get an STI from a toilet seat • You can’t get pregnant the first time you have sex • The morning after pill causes an abortion • If you get the HPV shot, you are safe from cervical cancer • You can’t get pregnant during your period • A person with an STI exhibits symptoms of disease • You can’t get an STI from oral sex • A person can’t have more than one STI at one time • Pre-ejaculation can not cause pregnancy • You can’t get pregnant before you have your first period

  17. Homework • Condom Hunt! • Go with a partner to “purchase” condoms (you don’t actually have to buy them) • The idea of this exercise is to get an idea of how readily condoms are available and the attitude of the salespeople when purchasing condoms

Day 5: Contraception & Antenatal care • Required Readings: • 3.12 & 3.14 • Learning Objectives: • To define contraception • To know about different methods of contraception • To evaluate the effectiveness of different methods of contraception • To understand why abortion may be necessary • To know how abortion is carried out • To know about prenatal care

  19. Starter • Move into your lab groups • Discuss your experiences when on the condom hunt • Time: 15 minutes

Activity 1 • There are 4 different methods of contraception: • Natural (rhythm, basal body temperature, etc.) • Hormonal/chemical (birth control pill, spermicide, hormonal implant, etc.) • Barrier (IUD, condom, diaphragm, etc.) • Surgical (vasectomy, tubal sterilization) • With your lab group, design an advertisement (poster + TV ad) that addresses the following for your method of contraception: • What is your target audience? • How easy is it to use? • Success rates when used properly? • What are some difficulties that may arise using it? • Myths/misconceptions regarding the method • Does it protect against STI’s as well? • Time: 40 minutes (30 to plan, 10 to present)

  21. Activity 2 • Abortion is always a hot topic of discussion between pro-life and pro-choice groups • Read through “Amber’s secret” in your lab group • There are 3 sections. Answer the questions that correspond to the section. • When every group is done section 1 we will discuss the questions and so on • Time: 30 minutes

  22. Day 6 & 7 • STI research & presentation • Take-home summative assessment
