  2. A great revival of interest in ancient Greek and Latin civilizations took place in England during the years 1500-1650, a period known as the Renaissance. At that time, numerous ancient Greek and Latin words were incorporated into the language. This continues today. When modern scientists need to name a new idea, process, or object, they tend to construct a word out of Greek or Latin roots. The Importance of Roots

  3. PHOBIA Fear, dislike, or aversion.

  4. VIDEO Acrophobia (n)- fear of heights.The woman faced her acrophobia and jumped from the plane.

  5. VIDEO Agoraphobia (n)- fear of open or public spaces. Paula Deen had agoraphobia for 20 years, which meant she could not leave her home.

  6. VIDEO Hydrophobia(n)- dread of water.The Wicked Witch of the West had hydrophobia. She thought water would melt her.

  7. VIDEO Monophobia (n.)- fear of being alone. Although Kevin wished for his family to leave, after awhile he developed monophobia.

  8. VIDEO Xenophobia (n.)- aversion to strangers. Schools teach children that is healthy to have xenophobia because strangers are dangerous.

  10. VIDEO Philanthropist (n)- lover of humanity; person active in promoting human welfare. Oprah is a famous philanthropist because she opened an all-girls school in South Africa.

  11. VIDEO Philharmonic (adj)- pertaining to a musical organization, such as a symphony orchestra. The love of music. “Weird Al” led the Junior Philharmonic in a concert.

  12. VIDEO Philhellenism(n)- the love of Greek culture.The woman’s family participated in philhellenism. They believed that Greeks continue to influence all parts of life.

  13. VIDEO Philology (n)- study (love) of language and literature. Rosetta Stone helps people who have a love of philology, or want to learn another language.

  14. VIDEO Philosopher (n)- lover of wisdom and knowledge. Plato is the most well known philosopher in history. He was esteemed as extremely wise.
