  2. All about Phonics • Phonics is taught every day for 20 mins • Session is made up of: Revisit and review Teach Practise Apply We use actions and pictures to help your child learn the phonemes. T:\Phonics\Jolly Phonics\Jolly Phonics Interactive Sounds .exe

  3. Teaching Phonics During phonics lessons children are taught the 44 phonemes (sound) and their graphemes (how to write it). They are also taught how to use them to read and spell.

  4. Phoneme • A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word e.g. c-a-t p-e-n f-i-sh ch-i-p-s l-igh-t . . . .

  7. Phonics Challenge!! • Can you say the phonemes in these words? dog tree chair shop cake pen

  8. Grapheme • A grapheme is the way we write the phoneme • 1 grapheme, can be written using 1 letter or more e.g. t ay igh

  9. and just to confuse you… A grapheme can represent more than one phoneme e.g. /oo/ can make the oo sound in wood or the oo sound in room

  10. Recognising the phonemes in a written word, e.g. c-u-p and merging them to say the word ‘cup’ Blending

  11. SOUND BUTTONS – Sound buttons are a good way of helping the children to blend. A Sound Button is put under each phoneme and as they are pressed the phonemes are said to blend the word

  12. Segmenting • Children identify the phonemes in a spoken word, e.g. h-i-m • They then write down the graphemes for each phoneme to form the word ‘him’

  13. ROBOT ARMS – This a good way to teach the children how to segment. The children chop the word up into the phonemes. They write each phoneme down to spell the word • pen fish light duck

Using Phonics in Writing • F2 – ‘Our Weekend News’ books – Complete each weekend and send in on the Monday • Encourage children to use robot arms, phoneme charts and key words learnt to date in their writing • Don’t worry if it is not spelt correctly as it is all about the process • You can always scribe underneath afterwards what it is they have written

  15. How do we teach reading? • Reading Books – these will be changed weekly. These will be either the same or one stage lower than their reading level. • Guided Reading – taught in small groups with teacher once a week with a focus .e.g key words, using phonics, pointing to words, comprehension • Reading Diaries – please comment on how they have got on at home so your child can move up the reading chart

  16. How can you help at home? • Share stories and talk about them • Retell stories together • Practise phonics using the mats in the front of the reading diary • Encourage using ALL cues for reading (picture, what makes sense, phonics) • Practise ‘Bear Words’
