Pass-through contributions • 501c19 versus 501c3 tax exempt status • Contributions to VFW are tax deductible, but contributions to VFW Auxiliary are not tax deductible • Many corporations, private foundations, United Way agencies, donor advised funds, etc. will only make charitable contributions to 501c3 designated organizations

  3. Pass-through contributions The VFW Foundation was established in 1996 as the official 501(c)(3) charity of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US (VFW), and exists solely to support the programs and raise awareness necessary to operate VFW in its effort to provide services for America’s veterans, military service members, and their families.

  4. Pass-through contributions • The VFW Foundation is available to serve as the 501c3 fiscal agent for charitable contributions to the VFW Auxiliary • Minimum contribution amount: $500 • Complete and submit form to insure contribution is accurately accounted for • 100% will “pass through” to your VFW Auxiliary– no service fees

  6. Community Support Grants • Up to $1,000 available to support VFW Post and Auxiliary community service projects • Post AND Auxiliary may each apply for a joint project; eligible for up to $2,000

  7. Community Support Grants • $400,000 granted in FY18 • $168K to support local nonprofits (e.g. Boy Scouts, food banks, senior centers) • $132K to support direct service projects sponsor by Post/Auxiliary • $100K for Post repairs and renovations

  8. Community Support Grants • New for 2019 Grant Cycle: up to $1,500 funding for projects that involve a VFW National Corporate Partner

  9. Community Support Grants • VFW Corporate Partner Collaboration Ideas • Invite Sport Clips to provide haircuts for homeless and unemployed veterans at community dinner • Invite Humana and/or Walgreens to provide health & wellness workshops at local Post • Partner with Humana & local Feeding America affiliate to conduct a local food drive • Invite Ace Hardware to provide grills and volunteers for community BBQ event
