Rotary is an International Organization • There are 530 Districts in 163 countries throughout the world. • Your club is in District 6400 which is comprised of 50 clubs with 2,000 members. • The District covers Essex County in Ontario, Canada and Wayne, Monroe and Lenawee Counties in Michigan, USA.

Rotary International President Bhichai RattakulDhonburi, BangkokThailand District 6400 Governor Bob Gallagher,Windsor-Roseland • Rotary International is governed by a president and a board of directors elected from all over the world. • Annually each District elects a District Governor - but each club is an autonomous group.

  7. Rotary Founder Paul Harris In the beginning… • The first Rotary Club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris. • The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary. • There are currently 31,256 clubs with 1,243,431 members.

  8. Women in Rotary • In 1988-89 women were admitted to Rotary. • Each year about 25% of the District 6400 club presidents are women.

  9. Service Above Self • Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose. • First project was public washrooms in downtown Chicago. • Rotary became the world’s first “service club”.

Group Study Exchange • Group Study Exchanges • Teams of one Rotarian leader and four non-Rotarian business or professional young people visit our district for four to six weeks, while our team visits their district for the same period.

  13. PHF & Benefactors Any person who has given $1,000 or more in US funds to the Rotary Foundation is designated a Paul Harris Fellow A person who has agreed to leave $1,000 or more in US funds from their estate is designated a Benefactor of the Rotary Foundation

Current Roseland Exchange Student, Maria Jose Moreno-Rodriguezfrom Mexico Youth Exchange • Rotary Youth Exchange Program • 16-18 year olds are exchanged world-wide. • Part of a 7,000 students/year program. • Rotarians host these young people in their homes for three to five months. • Students become part of the family.

  15. Object of Rotary • The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: • First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  16. Object of Rotary • Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

  17. Object of Rotary • Third. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life; • Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

Club Service • Those things that a Rotarian does to help make successful the running of the local club. • Vocational Service • The promoting of the “ideal of service” throughout the business and professional world. • Community Service • Urges every Rotarian to participate in all activities which make the community a better place in which to live. • International Service • Encourage and foster the advancement of understanding and good will among people of the world.

Board of Directors The Board of Directors of a typical Rotary Club are the four Directors, two of whom should be past-presidents, and the • President: • President-Elect: • Secretary: • Treasurer: • A new board is elected to take office on July 1 of each year. • All positions in Rotary are one year terms that change July 1.

  23. The Privileges in Rotary • The privilege of GIVING SERVICE to your community. • The privilege of DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL GOODWILL and understanding. • The privilege of helping BUILD HIGHER ETHICAL STANDARDS within your vocation through the common bond of Rotary.

  24. Your Obligations in Rotary Participation • To be a Rotarian you must give of your time and talents: • in community work • in social functions • in Club and District activities. Plan now to attendthe District Conferenceat Grand Traverse Resort May 1 – 4,2003

  25. Your Obligations in Rotary Attendance • Attendance at the weekly meetings is a benefit of Rotary. A minimum of 60% is expected. • You can maintain your attendance levels by making up at another Rotary Club within 14 days in advance or 14 days after a meeting is missed; or by attending a District event or a RI Convention.

  26. Your Financial Obligations • Initiation Fee zero to $100 • Annual Dues $100 to $300/year • Meals $5 to $15/week • Fines (Sergeant-at-Arms) $1 or $2 per week • Social Events average 200.00/year • Annual Donation to The Rotary Foundation- $100.00 US or more

  27. Membership There are two types of membership in a Rotary Club: • Active • Honorary

  28. Rotary is Fun • A service club should be fun to be a part of even when the work is tiresome. • Rotary strives to be a fun, young-at-heart club. • Social events are offered regularly. • Laughter is the language of Rotary. • We live up to RI Past President Hugh Archer’s theme: “Enjoy Rotary.”
