  3. What will you learn from this presentation? • Why would you want to take an online course? • What do the online courses look like? • Which online courses are being offered?

Why would I want to take an online courses? • Allow more flexibility • To do the course when convenient during the day • To take an extra elective • To get ahead for graduation/college credits • More choice in courses • Take during school day or • In addition to the school day • Enjoy using technology and the World Wide Web to learn

  5. Where did the online courses come from? • The content of the courses came from Florida Virtual School (www.flvs.net) • They are quality online courses • They are multi-dimensional • They are web based • They are engaging and interesting for students

  6. Florida Online High School – www.flvs.net • In existence since 1996 • Have 50 online courses taken by 3500 students throughout Florida • Never see students face-to-face • Student success – AP Testing results and student and parent surveys

  7. How are the courses delivered? • Primarily asynchronous • (students do content any time) • Synchronous capability • (online at same time- i.e. chat room) • Communication teacher to student via e-mail, phone and web

  8. How does an online course work? • Entire course on web • There is a Clovis teacher with students • Students and teacher communicate via: • Email • Electronic Assignments • Phone • Students work at own pace to complete assignments

  9. How do I do an online assignment? • Student logs in to course • Student reads lessons and follows directions • Turns in assignments via the In/Out box • Teacher grades assignments and returns assignments via the In/Out box • Students can work ahead in course or take more time if needed

  10. What are assignments like in an online course? • Some are like face-to-face courses and some are a little different. Assignments include: • Essays to write • Assignments that use websites to learn about information • Quizzes and tests • Projects to complete • See some examples

  12. Every student has own log-in name and password Parents can check student work and grades at any time with same log-in and password

  13. Algebra I Every course divided into modules – similar to units of learning. Students can progress at own pace.

  15. Algebra I Students need to thoroughly read assignments in order to be successful.

  19. Biology Outstanding web sites used for information. This site allows you to examine a cell online.

  20. Biology Labs completed at home with items found at home.

  21. Biology Use of a variety of technology tools to complete assignments.

  22. Biology Many assignments give immediate feedback. This assignment tells students what they already know.

  23. Biology Multiple choice tests give students immediate feedback… and grades automatically entered in grade book.

  24. AP Government All assignments are identified at the beginning of each module. Students turn in work online via In/Out box. Students notified automatically when assignment is graded by teacher. In/Out

  25. Who teaches these online courses? • Taught by experienced teachers in Clovis. • They have been trained in how to teach online. • Most of them teach regular face-to-face courses at one of the Clovis high schools, too.

Who has taken these online courses in Clovis? • Over 120 students have taken one of these online courses in Clovis and successfully completed at least one semester. • Other students started an online course and then discovered it took more time than they thought and ended up dropping or getting a poor grade.

  27. What do students who’ve taken an online course in Clovis think? • “I like doing this course online because you can work at your own pace and you aren't rushed to do the assignments.” • 9th grade girl – biology

  28. What students are saying… • “Online schooling is not what it seems to be. This class takes more devotion than others…there's the aspect of making your own schedule which, in my opinion, just messes with your head.” • 10th grade boy - algebra

  29. What students are saying… • “I think it is a great course because you can make your own schedule of when you want to do things. Whenever I have a problem, I just call my teacher and she answers my question.” • 9th grade girl – Algebra

  30. How much time does an online course take? • Same amount of time as a face-to-face course. • Face-to-face courses are generally: • 5 hours of class time each week • 1-2 hours of homework each week • Total: 7 hours per week • When you start an online course, it will take more time at the beginning.

  31. What makes a successful online student? • To be successful, students need to: • Be good readers • Be good time managers (schedule time each day to work on the course) • Be good communicators via email and phone with their teachers • Be self motivated learners • Have Internet access at home

  32. What students have learned…about doing an online course • Don’t have to be “online” all the time to do the course!! • Students can: • Print out information • Save information in Microsoft Word • Write out information and then log on to turn in work

  35. How do I register? • Talk with your parents. • Tell your counselor when you register for next year’s classes. • After registering, a phone interview will be conducted with each student.
