The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam. • Muslims believe the Qur’an is the book of God’s guidance and direction for mankind. • Muslims consider the original Arabic text to be the final revelation of God. • Islam says that the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. • The Qur’an was written down by Muhammad's followers while he was alive, although most early teaching was done orally.

  3. The Hadith and The Sunnah • The Hadith is a collection of the sayings about the actions of Muhammad. • The Sunnah is a record of the way Muhammad lived his life which should serve as an example to Muslims. • The concepts are very similar, but not identical. ,

  4. Diet“Forbidden to you (for food)are: dead meat, bloodthe flesh of swine, and that,on which hath been invoked [called on, prayed]the name of other than God…”Qur’an V:3

  5. Prayer“Ibrahim b. Yazid al-Taymi (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: The Earth is a mosque for you, so wherever you are at the time of prayer, pray there.”From the Hadith

  6. Dress for Women“And say to the believing womenthat they should lowertheir gaze and guardtheir modesty; that theyshould not display theirbeauty and ornaments exceptwhat (must ordinarily) appear…”Qur’an VVIV:31

  7. Alcohol“Satan’s plan is (butto excite enmity [anger] and hatredbetween you, with intoxicants [alcohol]and gambling, and hinder youfrom the remembranceof God and from prayer:Will ye not then abstain [hold back]?”Qur’an V:91

  8. Courteousness“When a (courteous) greetingis offered you, meet itwith a greeting still morecourteous, or (at least)of equal courtesy.God takes careful accountof all things.”Qur’an IV:86

  9. Charity“O ye who believe!Give of thingsWhich ye have (honorably) earned,And of the fruits of the earthWhich We have produced…”Qur’an II:267

  10. Forgiveness“Say: O my Servants whohave transgressed [sinned] against their souls!Despair [lose hope] not to the Mercyof God: for God forgivesall sins: for He isOft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”Qur’an XXXIX:23

  11. Respect for Parents“Thy Lord hath decreedthat ye worship none but Him,and that ye be kindto parents…Say not to them a wordof contempt [scorn], nor repel them,but address themin terms of honor,”Qur’an XVII:23
