  2. Flashback • Definition • Returning to an earlier time in a story for the purpose of making something clearer in the present • Example • Sammi stopped in her tracks aware of something chasing her; she had to get away. She returned to the current day from her memories.

  3. Multiple-meaning word • Definition • A word that has more than one meaning. • Example • Pen • Writing utensil • Animal holding cell

  4. Symbolism • Definition • The use of a concrete object to represent an idea. • Example • The rose is a symbol of love.

  5. Attitude • Definition • The feelings of a character as reflected in the selection. • Example • Billy always had a evil smile, and he always acts like the king of the world.

  6. Author’s purpose • Definition • The reason the author wrote the story. • Example • Janna wrote the story to inform people how to hula.

  7. Character • Definition • Person or animal that something happens to in the story. • Example • Kaitwon the supreme Queen Title in the pageant.

  8. Conclusion • Definition • A decision reached based on information presented in a selection. • Example • Shane finally figured out what happened to his painting.

  9. Dialogue • Definition • The written conversation between two or more characters. • Example • Jim yelled to the running puppy, “Slow down Hannah! Wait come back!” “arf woof wooooof,” Hannah barked in return.

  10. Outline • Definition • A shortened form of a selection in which details and ideas are listed in order. • Example • Cat goes to bank • Gets money for her vaction • Trips • Money is stolen • Cat calls police • Finds theive

  11. Plot • Definition • The action or events in a story • Example • Beth ran out into the street without looking and got hit by a bus.
