This Lesson Will • Introduce the World War II Unit • Allow students to collectively produce a comprehensive WWII summary map • Introduce the many areas of conflict of 1942 Africa/Europe/Middle East • Allow students to discover the most important issues of the global conflict • Encourage examination of causality and relationships between events and countries

  3. Our Process • We want students to collaborate to create a product • We want students to integrate knowledge rather than regurgitate • We want students to form connections rather than independent pieces of knowledge

  4. GoogleMaps • Allows collaboration • Allows pictures and information at markers • Allows multiple marker colors for separate events • Easy to use

Standards and Benchmarks Michigan Standards: Analyze the causes, course, characteristics, and immediate consequences of World War II by explaining the causes of World War II, including aggression and conflict appeasement that led to war in Europe and Asia Nazi ideology Major turning points Impact of Allied negotiations

  6. Standards and Benchmarks NTSE Standards: • Create original works as a means of personal or group expression • Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues • Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media

The Process • Students divided into groups of 2 • Each group selects a country/area • Groups research any important events &/or situations in given area around 1942 • Groups add color-coded markers to their area with pictures and brief info • Maps are combined to show overall Europe/Africa/Middle East situation

  9. This Map Will: • Be used by the teacher throughout the unit • Allow for repeated reference to previous concepts as students build knowledge • Clearly show a snapshot of battles, political events, and military engagement • Create a sense of ownership of the topics and information of the conflict
