Committee Structure Review • There are 23 members on the committee, including parents, Board members, administrators, general education and special education staff, a representative from District 214 and a representative from NSSEO. • Committee members meet one to two times per month for three hours. • In addition to meetings, members have three to five hours of work outside of the committee which includes: reading, reviewing data, completing questionnaires, etc. • LuAnn Shields and Cindy Beutke from Leadership Results facilitate the review process.

  3. Committee Objective: To develop a roadmap to guide the Department of Special Services for the next 3-5 years • The Leadership Results, Inc. facilitators work with key stakeholders using a customized and comprehensive process that promotes collaboration among all stakeholders. This process: • Uses survey data and input from all stakeholders (staff, families, and community), through multiple sources, to identify Department “Strengths and Opportunities for Improvement” to the present conditions. Data collection included: • Leadership Results Organizational Overview Surveys • NSSEO Needs Surveys • Future’s Education Feedback Interviews and Surveys • Listening Sessions • Leverages representatives from various disciplines, parents, and members of the school community to clearly define the direction of the Department. Key activities include: • Creating Values, Purpose, Vision, and Mission Statements • Determining Strategic Initiatives • Developing Strategic and Tactical Goals • Defining Action Steps for the Tactical Goals

  4. STRATEGIC PLANNING IMPLEMENTATION The following slide provides an overview of the five key components in the development of a Strategic Plan

Module 2: Envisioning • The committee learned about the functions and structures of purpose, values, vision, and mission statements. • Committee members completed several surveys/questionnaires about the purpose of the department, the stakeholders, internal and external forces impacting the department, mission of the department, and vision for the future • The committee came to consensus on all four statements in December. • The committee agreed that the Department would be better represented as the Department of Student Services versus Special Services.

  6. Purpose: • The purpose of the Department of Student Services is to maximize students’ potential as members of their community through the provision of an exceptional education.

  7. Values: TRUST: We value sustainable open, honest, and reliable relationships. CONSISTENCY & FAIRNESS: We are committed to a systematic process that ensures equity and access for all. COLLABORATION: We value dynamic and respectful partnerships with all stakeholders towards a common purpose of educating students. COMMUNICATION: We value open and purposeful dialogue.

  8. Values: GOALS-FOCUSED: We value a collaborative data-based process focused on student outcomes. TRAINING & SUPPORT: We value opportunities for families and staff to engage in purposeful dialogue and educational experiences that support the whole child.

Vision and Mission: • The vision of the Department of Student Services is to: Collaborate…Support…Empower for Excellence. • The mission of the Department of Student Services is to meet the unique needs of each student by providing high quality specialized services in collaboration with staff, families, and the community.

  10. Next Steps: • Committee members recently completed independent work to identify internal and external factors that impact the department. • Monthly committee meetings are scheduled through May, with the exception of March (due to ISAT testing). • Module Three: Strategy begins in January 2014. The focus of the January and February meetings will be on the development of strategic initiatives. • Module Four: Organizational Planning will occur in April 2014. The committee will determine the organizational and tactical goals for the department.

  11. Next Steps: • Module Five: Execution will occur in May 2014. The focus will be on approval of the action goals. • The completed Strategic Plan will be submitted to the Board of Education for approval in June, 2014.
