  3. Transforming Business Models Horizontal software-driven communications Vertically-integrated communications Connected devices and applications Devices and applications Devices and applications Communications software foundation Communications hardware and software VendorSpecific Communications hardware and software Multiple Vendors Existing IT infrastructure Telephony Infrastructure Telephony Infrastructure

  4. Using the Public Internet For Communications • Microsoft introduces Edge Server technology for secure and scalable Audio, Video, and Web communication • No need for IPSEC

  5. Remote User Remote User Internal User Remote User Internal User Remote User External User Internal User Internal User Internal User Remote User Remote User Internal User Remote User Secure & Scalable VoIP “how it works” Public Network Private Enterprise Network DMZ Public Network Private Enterprise Network DMZ Public Network DMZ Private Enterprise Network DMZ Public Network Private Enterprise Network Public Network Public Network DMZ Private Enterprise Network Public Network DMZ Private Enterprise Network Private Enterprise Network Public Network DMZ Private Enterprise Network DMZ HTTP reverse proxy (ISA Server) HTTP reverse proxy (ISA Server) HTTP reverse proxy (ISA Server) A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server A/V Edge Server 5. Internal user requests VoIP to be authenticated via a private IP address 8. Internal User and Remote User are now talking. 7. Internal User gets a public port to talk with Remote User. 6. Internal User accepts Remote User invitation to talk. 2. Remote user requests VoIP to be authenticated at a public IP address 3. External user is given a port (UDP) to communicate 1. Remote user SIP session request is authenticated 4. Remote User (SIP) invites Internal User to talk.

  6. Why is this important? • Remote users must have a valid security certificate can be authenticated by the HTTP Reverse Proxy Server • Remote users must know the public IP address of the A/V Edge server to connect to a public UDP port • Remote users are given a different public UDP port when authenticated • Internal or External Users have the right to accept or reject the request without risk • When the conversation is finished, all ports are closed • Security risks are very low because of the dynamic nature of establishing a communication session

  7. Office Communicator as Softphone • Check availability from any • MS Office application • Windows Mobile device • Browser • See and/or Talk from your PC with off the shelf devices • Do it securely… • …with no network complexity • …with trusted third parties • …from office, home or hotel • Costs as low as consumer VoIP services

  8. Microsoft Softphone Adaptively Equalizes For Variations in Network Performance Router T1 IPSEC MPLS Firewall Switch T2 T2 DMZ MDF T3 T3 WiFi Cellular Network Components In Many Areas Create Network Performance Variation

  9. QoE Inside Office Communicator • Multiple CODECs built into the client • Auto-CODEC- selection upon BW availability • Adapts to network conditions • Automatic MOS calculations Download Microsoft Quality of Experience (QoE) Source: benchmarking study performed by Psytechnics Ltd in December 2006

  10. UC DevicesCut Up To 60% Off Typical IP Telephony Costs • Extending Communicator experience • Personal computer, Web and mobile devices • Dedicated communications devices • Software for innovative IP phones • Implementations design with embedded software • Partners deliver production devices
