Importance of pastoralism to the region

The example of Kenya:

  • In Kenya, the ASALs constitute about 80% of the total land mass

  • Pastoralists in the ASALs own about 70% of the national livestock population with an estimated value of close to USD 1 billion.

  • Pastoralism provides direct employment and livelihood to over three million Kenyans.

  • Pastoralism has a low environmental impact compared to other land-uses in ASAL areas
