  4. Five Finger Rule • Open the book to any page. • Read the words on that page. • Count the number of words that you cannot read. • Use your fingers to help you decide if this is a good book to read.

  5. Asking the Right Questions • Don’t just ask questions at the end. • It’s important to check for understanding before, during and after reading.

Use Their Interest • I-Pad Applications • The iPad, which offers dozens of applications designed to meet the needs of learning disabled kids and beginning readers alike. • Children’s books made into movies • Read song lyric and talk about them • Use filters to find books by topic • Let them read what they like! (magazines, comics, et.)

  7. Make Your Home Like a Classroom • Place reminders on the mirror, such as sight words and vocabulary/spelling words. Place materials to remember on the fridge …but remember to avoid clutter

  8. Make Your Home Like a Classroom • Hang posters of material students need to practice. • Place vocabulary/spelling words on food mat. • Read the world around you. • Give children responsibilities to build confidence.

  9. Building a Reader • Read for 15 minutes a day! • Children can read independently, aloud to an adult, or back and forth to a partner.
