  4. Am I Winning? • “Winning” • Keeping up with Market • Example- if the S&P grew by 8% last year, and your portfolio grew by 8.5%-your doing well.

  5. The Regulators • SEC (The Securities and Exchange Commission) • NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers) • State Regulators

  6. Indexes • Dow Jones Industrials • contains 30 of the largest industrial companies (not always useful) • S&P 500 • 500 largest publicly traded companies (most widely used) • Wilshire 5000 • broader, includes almost every publicly traded companies • Domini 400 Social Index • Top 400 companies with good social and community practices. • Russell 2000 • smaller companies • NASDAQ 100 • 100 largest non-financial companies-contains Microsoft, Dell, Starbucks.

  7. Socially Responsible Investing • (SRI)-application of your ethical, social, political and environmental beliefs in making investment choices • Studies show-investing “responsibly” does not have to lower your return.

  8. Types of socially responsible investing • Screened Portfolios • Investing in good companies • Alternative Investing • Studies of SFI show that these companies actually outperform bad corporate citizens in the long-rung
