  1. LEARNING GOAL • I will observe structures and behaviors of a multicellular organism called a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (insect).

  2. INSECTS

  3. WORD BANK • Adaptation-Structures and behaviors that increase an organism’s chances of surviving and reproducing.

  4. COCKROACHES • For the next few classes, you will be studying the adaptations of a live insect. Relatives of this particular kind of insect have been on Earth for the past 400 million years, long before the first dinosaurs roamed Earth. This organism has some highly effective adaptations that have allowed it to survive for that long. The insect we will be studying is the cockroach!

  5. Only FACTS go in this column, not OPINIONS 

  6. HISSERS! • Today we are going to get acquainted with the cockroach!

  7. HANDLING • Roaches are living organisms, and do not bite or carry diseases. • They can be picked up by the sides of their thorax or abdomen and supported from underneath in your hand. • It is ok for them to crawl on your hands. • They will die if their exoskeleton is cracked! NO DROPPING THEM  • Use a plastic tub and spoon to get them to and from their habitat if you are not comfortable handling them. • NO SCREAMING AT ANY TIME!!! • When the bell rings, all roaches need to be in a container and hands on head.

  8. THIGMOTAXIC • Roaches are thigmotaxic, meaning they like to have physical contact with some structure for security. • That is why we have materials in their habitat.

  9. OBSERVATIONS • I want you to make as many observations as you can about the structure of the cockroach and its behavior. • As you watch them, you might notice things that you wonder about. Add those questions to the “What I’d like to find out” list on page 59. By the end of class you will have made many observations and should have several more questions about the roaches.

  10. MALE OR FEMALE? • Look at the transparency. • Can you tell if your roach is a male or female? • How do you know?

  11. HISSING • Did any of the roaches hiss? • When did it hiss? • Was the hisser a male or female?

  13. DISCUSSION • Let’s discuss our observations: • Cockroach walking? • Cockroach eating? • They have chewing mouthparts. The jaw moves side to side rather than up and down. Did you see any palpi? • Cockroach antennae? • What happened when you put sticky stuff on them? • Environmental Stimuli? • What responses did you observe to your tests?

  14. SUMMARIZING • How can you tell male cockroaches from female? • Which roaches hiss, and when do they hiss? • Where do you find the cockroaches when they are resting? • How do cockroaches respond to wind, water, smells, and movement?
