  1. Creating and marketing a school based business Or how to build an entrepreneurial empire!! By Andrew Greenwald, MSE Ballston Spa Central School district

  2. Phase 1- know your “employees” • What skill sets do your students already have? • What skills do you hope to teach through this business?

  3. Phase 2- know your potential “customers” • Who are you going to target (School, Community or both)? • What is the “repeat business” potential?

  4. Phase 3- know your facilities • What equipment/supplies/space do you need? • What does your school have? • How will you get what you need?

  5. The “nitty gritty” • Non-Profit status • Keep a ledger • Expenses back into the business or for student use • Becoming a “Club” or “Activity” • STUDENTS DON’T JUST WORK THERE, THEY “RUN” THE BUSINESS!!

  6. Don’t forget to…. • Tie everything back to the goals on the IEP • Keep a record of hours worked (for CDOS, etc.) • Collaborate with Related Services- Speech, OT, PT, etc. • Keep a “scrapbook”- photos, etc.

  7. Marketing your business • Start at “home”- BOE and PTA presentations • Chamber of Commerce • Newspaper and/or Television “launch” • KEEP IT IN THE PEOPLE’S EYE!!!
