  1. Bell Ringer 1-17 – 6 minutes • Study Guide Worksheet Do 1-6. You may keep the worksheet but write on in your notebook. • We will go over later. • Turn book to p. 159 when done and take out notes from 3-1.

  2. 3.1 Graphing Linear Equations 1 - 17 Objectives: By the end of the period, with an 85% accuracy, students will be able to: • Graph linear equations using the x- and y-intercepts • Demonstrate knowledge of Algebra 1 skills learned this semester

  3. Graphing Using Intercepts • x-intercept - The x-coordinate where the graph crosses the x axis. • To find the x-intercept, let y = 0. • y-intercept - The y-coordinate where the graph crosses the y axis. • To find the y-intercept, let x = 0.

  4. Graphing Using Intercepts2x+ 5y = 10 x-intercept y-intercept Let y = 0 • 2x + 5y = 10 • 2x + 5(0) = 10 • 2x + 0 = 10 • 2x = 10 2 2 • x = 5 x-intercept • x –int. is the point (5,0) Let x = 0 • 2x + 5y = 10 • 2(0) + 5y = 10 • 0 + 5y = 10 • 5y = 10 5 5 • y = 2 y-intercept • y-int. is the point (0,2)

  5. 2x + 5y = 10

  6. Graphing Using Intercepts7. y = 4 + x x-intercept y-intercept Let y = 0 • y = 4 + x • 0 = 4 + x • -4 -4 . • -4 = x x-intercept • x-int. is the point (-4,0) Let x = 0 • y = 4 + x • y = 4 + 0 • y = 4 y-intercept • y-int. is the point (0, 4)

  7. y = 4 + x

  8. Graphing Using Intercepts25. x = 5y + 5 x-intercept y-intercept Let y = 0 • x = 5y + 5 • x = 5(0) + 5 • x = 0 + 5 • x = 5 x-intercept • x –int. is the point (5,0) Let x = 0 • x = 5y + 5 • 0 = 5y + 5 • -5 - 5 • -5 = 5y • 5 5 • -1 = y y-intercept • y-int. is the point (0, -1)

  9. x = 5y + 5

  10. Semester 1 Study Guide 1. Five times a number b minus eight is the same as 15 more than a number g. 5b – 8 = g + 15 2. 2a – 6b, if a = 2, b = -5 2(2) – 6(-5) 4 + 30 34 6. 4x - 5 = 95 + 5 +5 4x = 100 4 4 x = 25

  11. 7. 5x + 12 = 10x + 21 -5x -5x . 12 = 5x + 21 -21 - 21 -9 = 5x 5 5 - 9 = x 5 8. 42 + 2(3) – 1 16 + 6 - 1 22 - 1 21

  12. 10. 3y + 5(4y – 5) 3y + 5(4y) + 5(-5) 3y + 20y - 25 23y – 25 11. 45x – 30 15 45x - 30 15 15 3x - 2

  13. Find the discounted price of the item. 12 . John bought the new NBA 2K11 game. The original cost for the game was $59. It was on sale for 20% off. What did John pay for the game? 1. Change the percent to a decimal 20% = .20 2. Multiply $59(.20) = $11.80discount amount 3. Subtract to get discount price $59.00 – $11.80 = $47.20 discount price John paid $47.20 for the game.

  14. 13. Find the total price of the camera. Camera: $98 Sales tax: 9% 1. Change the percent to a decimal 9% = .09 2. Multiply $98(.09) = $8.82tax 3. Add to get total price $98.00 + $8.82 = $106.82 total price The camera will cost $106.82.

  15. 14. State whether each percent of change is a percent of increase or decrease. Thenfind the percent of change. original: 28 new: 7 Decrease 28 - 7 = 21 Change = % 21 = p Original 100 28 100 28p = 2100 28 28 p = 75 75% decrease

  16. 17. The average income for a person with a high school diploma is $29,000. The average income of a person with a Bachelor’s degree is $52,000. What is the percent of increase? 52,000 - 29,000 = 23, 000 change Change = % 23,000 = p Original 100 29,000 100 29,000p = 2,300,000 29,000 29,000 p = 79 79% increase in pay for a person with a Bachelor’s degree.

  17. 16. Asia’s minivan required 6 gallons of gasoline to travel 250 miles. How much gasoline would she need for a 800 mile trip? Gallons = 6 gallons = x gallons Miles 250 miles 800 miles 250x = 4800 250 250 x = 19.2 miles
