New guidelines for PhD education at SLU • Adjustments following from the new HEA - starting points • Faculty boards will still be responsible for quality and management of  the PhD education • Only the Vice-chancellor can withdraw the right to supervision from a PhD student • Forms and routines for follow-ups during the education must be quality assured • The ruleswill be harmonized in order to • contribute to ”one SLU” • get a qualityassured system with tools for planning & documentation • simplifyrules and increaseefficiency in administration • integrate the learningoutcomes in planning and follow-up

New guidelines for PhD education at SLU • What has been done? • Working groups have prepared three successive versions of rules and guidelines • Different parts of the guidelines have been discussed in three open work-shops • The different versions of guidelines have been discussed in the faculties and in FUR • The guidelines, Version 3, are now open for comments up until November 21 https://internt.slu.se/sv/styrning-och-organisation/autonomiarbetet/forskarutbildning/ • What will be done now? • Finalizing the rules and guidelines – spring 2012 • Development of a web based system for the tools & documents

Procedure for planning and follow-up • Before admission • A preliminary research plan, time plan and a finance plan with the admission application from the head of the department to the faculty board • Directly after the admission • Supervisors and PhD student plan the education together and document it in the individual study plan. The planning consist of: • - Formulation of learning outcomes • - Discussion of forms for cooperation; roles and responsibilities • - Undertakings for supervisors and PhD student for the coming year aredecided and signed • The individual study plan is approved by the director of studies and saved in a database

Follow-up after one year of net study time • Supervisors and PhD student meet • Research plan and time plan are revised • The undertaking part is revised and supervisors and PhD student give written comments on unfulfilled undertakings • The introductory memo is discussed and possible consequences on the education are decided • Learning outcomes are discussed • The plans are revised and a new undertakings are decided, signed & saved in the database 

  6. Preliminary evaluation of the thesis • The thesis shall be preliminary evaluated by internal or external evaluators. Criteria for when an external preliminary evaluation shall be performed are given in the syllabus for the subject. • The preliminary evaluators judge whether the thesis is of sufficient quality for a public defense. • The preliminary evaluators shall judge to what extent the thesis implies that the PhD student has - broad knowledge in the field & deep specialist knowledge - knowledge of methods in general and in the specific field - an ability to engage in scholarly analysis of complex phenomena - an ability to conduct research....., • i.e. it relates to some of the examination goals in HEO
