Lecture 1PROKARYOTES AND VIRUSES

Viral structure
Viral Structure

  • Have viral genome of DNA/RNA (ss/ds)

  • Viral genome is surrounded by capsid.

  • Capsid is protein coat.

  • Coat consists of 1 or >1 types of protein subunits arranged into rod-like/polyhedral shape.

  • Coat protein - protects the viral genetic material during the journey to a new host cell.

  • Some have additional structural features, such as the envelope of animal viruses or the tail of bacteriophages.
